I like straightforward French cuisine, and I like creative approaches as well. Baru is a good blend of both. Excellent ingredients and well-prepared dishes. The atmosphere is soothing and relaxing.

We had an incredible 4 course meal at Baru 66 on a Saturday night. This restaurant is a French bistro and so the ambience and the dress is casual. Chose the special May menu which included a soup or fish, the main entree which was a chicken breast or salmon, followed by a cheese and salad course and lastly, the... More

This is one of our favorite places to dine and the food and experience is absolutely great! I look forward to each time we come to eat here because I know the food will be delicious and enjoyable.

You can see from my profile that I enjoy traveling almost as much as I enjoy eating an amazing meal. This was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Chef Baru and his staff have offered a worldly dining experience for Des Moines, and it saddens me to see some reviews are less than perfect. I had... More

Two years ago we considered this the best restaurant in town. Sadly, the quality of the food and service has deteriorated since then to the point that we decided we won't go again. Grossly overpriced, particularly the wines.

Last visit I had a new salad with Lentil, mushrooms and egg. Way to hit it out of the ball park once again. The quail was tender and juicy. I visit Baru several times a month and have never had a bad meal. Looking forward to trying the New Art center location for lunch.

I only come through DSM occassionally but have decided this is probably the best place. Its an OK room but the food very good and with wine list is decent and reasonable. Nice service, chef came to table for feedback. I'll keep going back.

Went there on the last night of restaurant week. We didn't have a reservation but it was late so we figured we'd get in. The hostess lied and said the 5 empty tables she had were reserved. We should have walked out then. She seated us at the bar instead. For the whole time we were there no one took... More

The French chef, owner, David Baruthio, has brought a higher standard of food in Des Moines. The menu is imaginative, the quality of food, presentation and, service is top notch-this has to be the best over all, restaurant in the state. The owners always greet visitors.

The dining experience here is outstanding from beginning to end. The food here is different from ordinary restaurants, which is very refreshing. The dishes are created by the chef and he does an excellent job of combining flavors and foods together. We had an anniversary dinner there and don't regret choosing this restaurant!
