If you are looking for food that is outside the usual boring burgers, soup and sandwiches, head to Open Sesame. There you'll find a good selection of salads, falafel sandwiches, gyros, and appetizers, to name just a few. I have been to Open Sesame many times and have always enjoyed it. Great coffee and tea as well. The wonderful aromas... More

OK - I haven't tried the schwarma yet, but that's because there are so many other good things on the menu. You can go and enjoy authentic belly dancing, or just dine, OR just go for the bar. Nice, intimate restaurant in the East Village, with tasty and affordable middle eastern cuisine. They also have syllabub on the menu.

We came in and were directed to a table and my husband went to use the bathroom. It took them awhile to get menus to us. There were 2 men serving one was on his phone quite a bit of the time while we were there. We ordered a falafel pita with small salad for $10 and the grape leaf... More

I have a problem with restaurants being so dark you can't see your food. It's unappetizing to me; I like to appreciate my food with my eyes too. Not a lot of menu choices, but the food was good.

As visitors to Des Moines, our plan was to eat at a nearby fun spot but the 1.5-2 hour wait was off-putting, especially with kids in the group. A consult of TA made us realize we were right around the corner from this highly recommend spot. All lovers of Middle Eastern cuisine, we headed over and were not disappointed. The... More

I travel to Des Moines often and have eaten at most of the bigger name places in town. None of them come close the what is offered at Open Sesame. The food is original, fresh and tastes exceptional. The staff is efficient and friendly especially the manager, MJ who makes you feel not only welcome but like a special guest... More

I've eaten here perhaps a half dozen times, and have found it to be a pleasant experience. The menu is somewhat limited, focusing on middle eastern dishes, Everything I've had here uses fresh ingredients, are prepared to order, and are spiced to my liking. Because the space is small, seating perhaps 25 people, service is by one or two people,... More

Great space, great food. We had the basics: hummus, chicken schwarma, felafel. The hummus was very good, as was the chicken schwarma. The felafel was fantastic, best I've ever had. I only ate half and took the rest home. It might have been better after a few hours. The sides were also great. The salad has something -- cardamom? --... More

I really enjoyed the ambience of Open Sesame the best. Very beautiful setting. Great place to bring date. I was there for girls night out. Started with some different martinis, which were delicious. We shared different hummus' and tzatziki(the best I've ever had). I had the eggplant dish, first item on menu. Really great. Others had lentil soup, gyro and... More

I have begun to make it a point to eat here whenever I return home to Des Moines. Not only is it excellent food at a decent price, but the style of the restaurant and menu create a true Eastern feel. I have only been for lunch, which has a small-ish menu but everything is so good, you won't be... More
