Description: Nestling in the picturesque North Downs its hard to believe that...
Nestling in the picturesque North Downs its hard to believe that Maidstone is only a stones throw away from Thurnams Black Horse Inn. Looking from the outside like the most traditional pub in Britain white washed, tile hung, sash windowed, sign swinging in the breeze inside will come as no great shock. In winter youll find a roaring fire in the imposing brick fireplace, dried hops drape from the ceiling and antiquey dark wood is in abundance. In summer diners can head outside to a paradise of shadey pergolas, ponds and green lawn or eat in the conservatory. Homegrown produce is key in a sophisticated menu which combines traditionalism with contemporary dining with impressive results.

I have visited this place many many times over the years (20+) and it was one of my favorites. I've had birthdays here, family meals, romantic dinners, work parties, lunches with friends etc etc. I have noticed a slow decline in the quality of the food but when myself and my partner came for Valentines Day we knew it would... My husband booked this restaurant 2 weeks ago through open table after reading good reviews for our wedding anniversary. On arriving this evening we were told there was no booking when told had booked through open table , we were told that always happens! They had plenty of free tables so could fit us in which was lucky ! Ordered... More

What a dissapointment this was, Small pretentious portion sat in the middle of my plate. Slow roasted belly pork (lovely), then some mash mixed in with black pudding, about a desert spoon of barely cooked spring greens and a spoon of carrot puree ( whats that all about?). All for £16.95. £3.00 for a pint of lemonade £3.80 pint of... More

We arrived and a table found immediately in the restaurant . Great Service and food. The next day we were really blown away by the wedding venue. Everything was perfectly organised and the meal and buffet were excellent. The on-site rooms were excellent and a great convenience for the wedding party. So in short everything perfect all food and staff... More

We went to the Black Horse in Thurnham for my grandson's first birthday. We chose to sit outside and were promptly given a high chair. Our order was taken by a friendly waitress and our food arrived quickly. There were seven of us and we all chose different meals. All commented on how good the food was.

This was about our 6th visit and probably our last. The menu is pretty basic and limited but normally the food is ok, however, not tonight we ordered drinks and the White wine was not drinkable I had to give it back and request a different wine. When the waitress bought the new glass of wine back she said that... More

Plaice with brown shrimp butter and samphire? Difficult to identify as such. An over cooked flatish fish is the closest I can get. Three or four shrimps no butter. Chopped green beans and broccoli a poor substitute for samphire. My daughters fish pie had great texture and good content but contained so much salt it left the inside of my... More

We booked a table here because it was one of the places we could find that was open on a Sunday evening. Having read a couple of reviews and been recommended the Black Horse it seemed like a good choice. The staff seemed busy when we arrived even though there were few customers in at the time: probably clearing up... More
