Description: Nestling in the picturesque North Downs its hard to believe that Maidstone is only a stones throw away from Thurnams Black Horse Inn. Looking from the outside like the most traditional pub in Britain white washed, tile hung, sash windowed, sign swinging in the breeze inside will come as no great shock. In winter youll find a roaring fire in the imposing brick fireplace, dried hops drape from the ceiling and antiquey dark wood is in abundance. In summer diners can head outside to a paradise of shadey pergolas, ponds and green lawn or eat in the conservatory. Homegrown produce is key in a sophisticated menu which combines traditionalism with contemporary dining with impressive results.

We visited here for a business lunch. Waited 20 mins for order to be taken after calling a waitress to our table. Both pieces of cod had an awful smell of ammonia. Having a catering background we knew instantly that this cod was 'off'. We sent it back to be told by the waitress that chef said the cod was... More

Loved this place having heard so much about it. Went with a family gathering. Starters, main and pudding all lovely along with the decor. Great staff and a nice pint added to the ambiance. And so close to Maidstone too which is a bonus.

Arrived for Sunday lunch had a table booked for 3pm. Got in at 2 and had a drink by the fire. Allowed us to bring our 2 dogs which was a bonus. The food was so tasty. We had roast beef which melted in your mouth and roast lamb also very tender and tasty. The roast potatoes were soooo good... More

Service was absolutely diabolical. Waitress slammed the food (which was very dry and over cooked) on the table without saying a word, ordered drinks (twice) which never arrived. Spoke to the manager who was uninterested and just as rude as the waitress. This used to be a beautiful pub with an atmosphere now it's poorly run and un inviting. Do... More

We booked on a Sunday for a quiet family meal. Although we had booked we had to wait a while for our table. When we got our menu I was quite surprised at the cost of most of the dishes so I ordered the cheaper Beeroot Risotto and the others in the party both ordered the Roasts. The service was... More

We visited this restaurant as a group of 4 for sunday lunch. The setting and the staff were great but we were disappointed with the flavour of some of the food. The starter that included crab had no crab flavour at all, the roast beef and lamb were perfectly cooked but had no flavour. The syrup sponge was light and... More

Charming old-style building on various levels in peaceful setting. Very busy when we first arrived due to a wedding party but soon thinned out. Staff friendly and helpful, menu suited most appetites and tastes, good real ale choice. Sandwiches particularly good - especially the club sandwich. The only thing spoiling it was our walk leader's comment that the publican was... More
