Nestling in the picturesque North Downs its hard to believe that Maidstone is only a stones throw away from Thurnams Black Horse Inn. Looking from the outside like the most traditional pub in Britain white washed, tile hung, sash windowed, sign swinging in the breeze inside will come as no great shock. In winter youll find a roaring fire in the imposing brick fireplace, dried hops drape from the ceiling and antiquey dark wood is in abundance. In summer diners can head outside to a paradise of shadey pergolas, ponds and green lawn or eat in the conservatory. Homegrown produce is key in a sophisticated menu which combines traditionalism with contemporary dining with impressive results.

A good meal was enjoyed by all except the roast lamb was fatty and gristly

We visited The Blackhorse with friends and found an oldie worldly traditional Kentish style pub. We all had Sunday roasts and the Yorkshires were king size and lovely. Only complaint was that the roast lamb was gristly and rather fatty. The rest of the meal was very good and thoroughly enjoyable... read more

Great place for eating either for special occasions or just because you don't want to cook! Lovely conservatory dinning or in the pub area very quirky and old, great big fireplace in the bar which must be lovely in the winter, nice gardens for outside drinking and eating, also has functions rooms and can accommodate weddings, great views. Lovely friendly... More

Food was as good as ever. Service was attentive but still managed to be unobtrusive. Good value for money.

Went for a family meal yesterday, being a bank holiday and not having booked a table we were greeted at the bar with a fantastic welcome and they managed to provide a table for us in the restaurant, the service was prompt and friendly and you really got the sense that nothing was too much trouble. We ordered off of... More

My husband and I, together with his sister and her husband ate here for the first time last night and had a lovely evening. From the welcome by the bar staff, the very enjoyable food (of which was plentiful on every plate) to the pleasant and attentive waiting staff, we had a very pleasant evening. We were seated overlooking the... More

I special occasion such as my wife's birthday should be celebrated with something different.....I found it in the Black Horse Inn at Thurnham. Set in Thurnham village and in perfect unspoilt countryside it projects nothing but calm and peace for the hungry diner. Welcoming staff and a warm atmosphere assisted in making us feel at home. A high level of... More

Me and my boyfriend came here Saturday evening just gone and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was delicious and the staff were great, in particular the lady that served us called Jo was really friendly. Can't wait to come back here again!

Definitely the best carvery we have ever been too. Always 4-5 meats on offer, plus you get an AMAZING home-cooked dessert included in the price! My favourite dessert is the Tom, Dick and Harry (3 different desserts on one plate) and the kids favorite is Dip N Lick - marshmallows, fruit etc with chocolate sauce to dip into! The staff... More

The Blackhorse is known locally as a gastro type of restaurant and have eaten here on a few occasions. The setting itself is lovely but the restaurant is cramped there are too many tables and you feel like you are sitting on top of each other, so much so it's hard to have a conversation as you'll be easily over... This pub is just down the road from where I live and I have to admit I had never visited and after dropping by one evening I am looking forward to returning! I stopped in on the way home with a hungry child and lots of people had recommended it for a good place to eat. I was sat immediately... More
