Politics and pie shakes

Really cute old diner with a very Iowa menu: pork loin sandwich (grilled or fried), chicken strips (tasty), and pie shakes. The walls are covered with framed photos and news clippings of former presidents' and presidential hopefuls' visits. Save room for a pie shake. What is a pie shake? It's a... read more

Our family stopped in one evening, had "breakfast" supper. Hamburg Inn was pretty full, but staff kept moving. Their pancakes are very good. About plate size, 2 of them in an order. Omelets are very good too. Have had their club sandwich in the past- was great. They offer homemade pies and ice cream...very popular. The only negative is the... More

I've been to hamburg several times and I don't understand how the place is still in business. The food is just terrible low quality greasy and gross. If you're extra lucky the degenerate cooks will be blasting edm music from the kitchen. Overall, restaurants in this town are pretty bad so i guess it is what it is. Cook for... More

I LOVE the Hamburg Inn. I've loved eating here for two and a half decades. However, the last few times I've come, the service has left something to be desired. I have been a waiter. It isn't that hard to keep a coffee cup full and take an order. The last time I was here it was very busy, so... More

My wife and I went to this Iowa City institution for dinner. Because she has Celiac Disease, we are always on the hunt for good, safe places to eat. The waitress taking our order was well versed in a gluten-free meal and explained that they had options for her and separate toasters and grills for gluten free preparation. She answered our... I really like the food here, especially the milkshakes in a variety of strange exotic flavors. But don't look where the food comes from.

Service was very good; food is acceptable; Iowa City ambiance. There are better; and, there are worse.
