Owners and friends Naftaly Stramer and Ofer Sivan created Oasis the Falafel Joint in the summer of 2004. After meeting for lunch in downtown Iowa City the duo lamented that (at the time) falafel was nowhere to be found, and vowed to right this wrong. Naftaly had just left the tech industry and Ofer had just completed his degree in engineering – an unlikely starting place for what would become the world’s best hummus, falafel and fries.

Tasty and filling

My son and I each had the falafel pita with gyro. The hummus and babba ganoush spread inside served as a tasty condiment to the meat. The Mediterranean salad and falafel inside were also tasty. My husband had the kabob plate, choosing gyro and beef kafta (tasted like hamburger) as the main dishes... read more

The food here is great, service is a little slow and parking is a pain, but the falafel is fantastic and their french fries are to die for.

Oasis is the best vegan eating experience in Iowa City (they also have food for carnivores, but we can't speak to that.) It's got no atmosphere (kind of like a fastfood restaurant's) - dining tables are squeezed into the front ordering area or in a room in the back - but the falafel on pita, with their homemade hummus (and... I always stop here when I am in Iowa City and sometimes more than once! The pickled veggies are delicious on the felafel. I wish I was there right now!

We try to stop here every time we go through Iowa City. Everything is delicious and a great value. I am not a big French fry person at all, but even their French fries are some of the best I ever had. I usually order a half falafel sandwich, but have had other sandwiches and foods there and loved them.... More

You can't go wrong here, everything is good. If you haven't tried this sort of food, you should. Great for vegetarians, great variety. Nice people, low prices.

Wow. So, I find myself in Iowa city. So far from what I know, and looking for a decent dinner, Mediterranean strikes my fancy - so I check this place out and all the reviews are amazing. We get there and the place is divey, crowded, and somewhat confusing. You have to order your food, find a seat, and they'll... More

I love this place. The atmosphere is VERY casual. You order at the counter, then they bring you your food when it is ready. The menu can be a little overwhelming. It is on the wall and there are so many choices. This place also sells wraps at the hospital I work at and I eat one every day when... More

Oasis Falafel is located near downtown Iowa City. Service is prompt and friendly. There are a wide variety of interesting menu item choices even though Oasis Falafel is a fast food restaurant. I had the falafel pita with a side of tabouli, which were delicious. I got the half-pita, and it was a generous portion size. My son was equally... More

Oasis is a small, casual, and informal restaurant with good and affordable food. Our meal included hummus, lightly pickled red cabbage, madjadra and maza ball soup. Everything was fresh, tasty, and interesting. If you have not tried falafel, you are offered a free sample. The wait staff is friendly and accommodating, the food is delivered promptly and the cost is... More
