Enjoying the bread in England

Brought a delicious loaf of San Francisco style sourdough bread back to England to enjoy. It survived the trip and we are currently eating it. This is the closest to SF sourdough outside of California that I have tasted. Well done Bread Garden for getting it right!

Don't let the prices scare you. It IS in downtown. The store is impeccably clean and has a great variety of product from wines to fresh vegetables and meats.

Suprise find coffee shop and bakery. Trader Joes style grocery store is included. Free parking at the door.

We only had buffet breakfast but it was decent. Great biscuits and gravy. Bakery was good but a bit over the top

Big layout, packed shelves, with Trader Joe's-like convenience foods, plus deli items, drinks. The gelato bar--which is a separate concession--has unusual flavors but the basic texture and taste of gelato is there. A few tables under heat lamps in an enclosed, undecorated space just outside of the store.

And the self-serve food is not too bad, with something for everyone. We liked the location on the pedestrian street where we grabbed a salad and a glass of wine and sat and watched the crowd on a warm evening. The salad selections were fresh and well stocked, and it was obviously a popular venue for everyone. Good place for... More

Huge salad bar with quality grub for lunch or a quick dinner. Hot items for rainy cool days, outstanding soups (Tuscan tomato with Parmesan croutons), smoothies (Pear Bliss), and heavenly desserts. The tiramisu is the best in town. Spend as little or as much as your budget allows.

My husband and I stopped in to pick up some after dinner desserts while downtown. In the past, we have found that they have had great options. This time, we were not impressed. The 'artisan' gelato didn't even taste like gelato. I don't know if it was just old but it was hard and icy, not creamy at all. The... More

We have long used the Bread Garden as a quick dinner place when we are too busy to cook, but now Wally the Wine Guy has set up shop in the wine department and it's a destination for us when we want advice, great wine, and wine pairings with food. No one I know has Wally's expertise in wine and... More

We often hear about destination dining when we visit cities, but not always destination grocery…although it seems that this might be a current trend in travel as well. For the first-time visitor to Iowa City, the Bread Garden was the best find we encountered besides the Carver Hawkeye Arena and basketball game itself. Connected as it is to the truly... More
