Great Italian Food and Great People

We visited this restaurant for dinner with family. We were promptly greeted and were seated within a few minutes. Cocktails were prepared correctly, my wife is rather picky, and were good. Their menu is very good with lots of choices including Gluten-free options which are especially important to... read more

Great service yet unfortunately found several flaws.... Tomato sauce was very bitter maybe just their style but to me was acidic and bitter not fresh and sweet. Was very dark red not bright red like when I make it at home. The veal was tough and thick I was expecting hammered thin this was thick like a veal chop again... More

Lunch or dinner, it's the best Italian restaurant in town. Also the hardest to find! Our little secret. Get the chicken or shrimp amagio. We've tried multiple times to replicate and can't so we have to keep going back and back and back. They also have the best tiramisu in town. Great wine list as well. Enjoy!

The food at Baratta's is always of the finest quality, and is lovingly prepared. The atmosphere is homey, and the service is always top notch. Prices are very reasonable. The original location on South Union is still my favorite. Off the beaten path, but worth it. Do yourself a favor, and try it.

This is one of the best restaurants in the Des Moines area. It sits in a neighborhood setting, but it has the best meals on the south side. You will agree once you have their cheese soup....one of the best in the country! I have yet to hear anyone not like that soup. When we are in the area, this... More

My friends boasted about this place. I was visiting DesMoines. It was late (8:00pm.) when we stopped after the Zoo Brew activity at the zoo. They close the kitchen at 9:00p.m. Italians are known for slow, deliberate meals. We would have one hour. From the get-go, we were rushed into making choices and leaving the restaurant. This was from one... More

Compared to other recent reviews our dinner at Baratta's was rather a disappointment. While the bar area was comfortable with a nice décor; the dining areas we saw were small rooms with too many tables crammed in them. The 2nd floor room we ate in barely allowed a narrow pathway for servers to haul the large trays of food through.... More

Baratta's just keeps getting better. I wish they'd bring back the steak Oscar. It was sublime. Their spaghetti rivals Latin King. The Cajun chicken alfredo is a fave and makes me think of New Orleans. The only time I was disappointed was one Saturday night at 6:30PM we ordered pizza and onion rings to be delivered. Joe called us back... More

Baratta’s has been around for a long time – in fact, the last time I was there was probably 30 years ago. The waitress we had (who was excellent) had been there since 1999. This is not a rookie establishment and it shows. Discreetly located on Des Moines’ south side in a residential neighborhood, the establishment served as a bootleg... More

This restaurant is nestled right in the middle of the neighborhood... In fact it is a converted house. The prices are in line with the quality and quantity of food you get. My husband and I love the homemade fried cheese appetizer. They have homemade salad dressings. The bread is fresh and delicious! I've ordered their Seafood Genovese which is... More
