We had great service when we went to 801 Chophouse this time. The food was spotty, my lemon pudding dessert was bland and my wife's filet was cooked wrong, sent back and cooked wrong again. It became expensive cat food. However my delmonico cut was great and the Gnocchi is among the best I've had.

A great place to go to enjoy excellent food. Keep in mind this is more for the dining and eating experience, so the pace of the meal is slower than at most restaurants and the prices much higher. The staff is attentive and very knowledgeable about the different cuts of meat and preparations. All side dishes are ordered separately unless... More

In looking at reviews for this restaurant you will notice that the greatest negative is the value. And it's true that you can get a great meal in Des Moines for less than half the price. But you know about the cost going in. So, why go? Here's why: The steaks are pretty good. I would say better than average... More

I was invited to have dinner here: fantastic. We had a wonderfull steak, the steak you only get in the US, not in Europe. I certainly will go there again when I have the opportunity. One minus: the prices for the wine is (too) high.

I've been here a few times now. The food is excellent. The steaks are amazing. Prime beef is hard to come by. Its expensive, but worth it. The service is also excellent.

Having recently returned from a week in Asia and in Des Moines on business, I wanted to have a good steak. Ended up having a great bone-in filet with a Maytag blue cheese lettuce wedge salad and lobster bisque soup. Paired with a couple of glasses of Cabernet (excellent wine selection, by the way even by the glass) and a... More

I am a steak guy and I love this place. Great everything. Leaves the chain steakhouses like Flemings in the dust. Admittedly it is expensive but no more so than other fine steakhouses. Wine list is extensive and the service is spot on. Can never go wrong here.

801 Chop and Steak is a great place to get a quality steak and good wine. It is, however, not much more than that. Perhaps it needn't be more than that. However, the price level in Des Moines will likely cause most people to expect a complete, high level dining experience. For me, it falls a bit short. The service... More

We are big fans of the finer "Steak House" dining and after hearing good reviews and this "is the place to go" on our first vist we were completly turned off. We caled for reservations on whim and expected to ave difficulties getting in. We did get a little grief on the phone and expected as much and it sounded... More

If you are on a business expense account, great place to dine and drink. Very good wine list but pricey. Lobster mashed potatoes were fantastic. Grilled asparagus was tasty but the stalks were a bit woody. Filet was perfectly cooked, charred just right with a nice spice rub. Atmosphere is very cozy for a date night or even if you... More
