Was at Alba last week while visiting Des Moines, Iowa. For a city with a world famous sculpture park, I was unsure of whether the restaurant scene had the same reach? Well, along came Alba. Went with some friends and had a very memorable experience. The food was as good as in many of the more notable eateries in major... More

In Des Moines for a family reunion. Chose restaurant after suggestion of cousin, a Des Moines resident. Excellent food featuring local products. Blue corn soup, rabbit confit both excellent. Well priced wines by the glass or bottle. Must try on your visits to Iowa capitol.

Our friends Shannon and Ellie picked out this place to take us specifically so I'd have a great new spot to write about for my blog.  To say they chose wisely would be a staggering understatement.  I can't remember the last time I ate that well. The shining star for all of us was the plate of morels we shared... More

This was one of the tastiest meals I've had in a while. I had the chive potato gnocchi with prawns (at least that's what was recorded on the receipt). It was perfectly flavorful and filling. The prawns were actually surprisingly mushy, but I'll overlook that because it was still so good. I also had the pickled vegetables as a light... More

Alba really rocks. The whole experience was fun and memorable, from the intelligent, friendly and attentive server to the interesting, delicious, savor-every-bite dishes. I'm still dreaming about the potato gnocchi prawns in a rich but fabulous white wine cream sauce. And the chorizo tater tots --- holy yum. Topping it all off at the end was a rhubarb strawberry crisp... More

Alba, along with D'Jango, Baru 66 is one of our favorite restaurants in Des Moines. The food is good, service great, in a some what unpretentious old car dealership. The name is also interesting, it derives its name from the while oak that used to tower over the residential single story homes-Quercus alba is the botanical name of the oak.

We chose this restaurant based on location. Should have researched deeper. We had a family dinner here with 9 people celebrating a graduation of a son from Drake University. Had what they called a reservation but upon arrival at the scheduled time - no table. Waited 30 more minutes before w had a table. We called reservation in 3 days... More

Great dinner with family group. Menu has big variety with interesting taste combinations. Entrees, salads, sides and greens all locally grown. Hanger steak, Halibut and a pork dish all terrific. Desert was a deep chocolate tort with buttermilk based ice cream. Tasty but contrasting combination. Service person was an enthusiastic and detailed "educator" on the menu items....nothing she recommended failed... More
