The sign on the door read "open for lunch 11:00 to 1:00" We got there at 1:45. We were about to leave when a lady came out the door and asked us if we were hungry. We said yes but could see that they were closed. She said, well come on in, I am sure we can find you something... More

Went right past the place, not even giving a second look. We then found out that it was the only open restaurant for miles. We went back to the restaurant and were very pleasantly surprised. Inside was very nice and the food was great. The value was outstanding. I highly recommend it!

We had dinner here on July 15. Things were a little strange at first as it seemed no was working. I finally went and located the hostess and waitress who made no attempt at friendliness. Things got somewhat better at least with the hostess. Waitress didn't have much to say. But, the Windsor Pork Chop made up for all of... More

This restaurant sits on the bank of the Des Moines River in Bonaparte, Iowa. (The old water wheel is still attached to the outside although it is not operative.) The food was all very good, from the vegetable soup served in tin cups, to the unique fried bread which came with the meal. My friend got the ham steak and... More

Great service, tasty food, never a surprise...my 1st choice always for Saturday nights...I arrive early, before the crowd shows up. Generally get the beef filet or the ribeye. Soup, salad, entree & potato, reasonably priced. Been eating here for 35 years!

Located in a beautifully restored old mill beside the river. We have eaten lunch here several times, always lunch, and have never been disappointed. The pork tenderloin sandwich is always perfectly cooked. The lunch specials are always great and the house made pies are wonderful. Order your desert early as the favorite pies go fast.

One should never wonder in SE Iowa without a stop for a meal at the Bonaparte Retreat. Dining there is a wonderful experience. The historic river community, and the nostalgia of the old mill/restaurant creates a very pleasing ambiance. From the lunch specials to the outstanding dinners, the food is delicious and the prices are reasonable

This quaint steak house is in the old mill building in Bonaparte, Iowa. We went for our anniversary. We love their steak and prime rib.

My husband and I recently ate at Bonaparte Retreat. The building was beautifully restored. The food was average. The waitress was rude and very unfriendly. We were very disappointed as we were hoping for a special evening.
