Great lunch

It's always nice to eat in historic buildings. The atmosphere and surroundings are a treat to the senses. Likewise, the lunch menu was diverse and nicely priced. They have a duo and trio option - 1/2 sandwich (your choice) and sides. The soup is homemade (loaded potato and chili was very... read more

This place came highly recommended by locals. The sandwiches are great! Cookies amazing! The only reason for three stars is the filthy bathrooms!!!!! If bathrooms are dirty, good chance kitchen is as well, no excuse for that bad if bathroom!!!!!

We stopped in for lunch on our way back to Chicago. The sandwiches and soup were wonderful. The staff was also wonderful and very attentive. It was nestled in a wonderful historic town.

You can't go wrong at this place for lunch or a casual dinner. Fabulous creative sandwiches and soups are always tasty and reasonably priced.

I walked to this place after parking my motorcycle up the road a bit and checking out the downtown area. Went inside it is nice inside. But for lunch time the service was a tad on the slow side and it was not crowded at all inside. Once my food came the food was very good. But one should not... More

I was excited to try this place as I am a sucker for a deli sandwich. Well, I could have made a better tasting sandwich at home and for a lot cheaper quite honestly. I guess if you like bland, mediocre food it would be okay.

My husband and I have been Sunday regulars for years. That ended as of yesterday (10/26/14) when service was exceedingly poor for the second time in a row, the server was rude and would not wipe down the table, which was filthy, until we she was ready to put down the baskets of food and we begged her not to... Beautiful late October day, in town to enjoy the architecture and the wonderful fall colors. The restaurant was much busier than they expected, due to the great weather. The food was delicious, the soup really hit the spot, and the service was excellent. We will certainly return next time we are in Madison.

The Downtoner doesn't obviously have anyone in its kitchen who actually knows how to cook, it is bad amateur cooking, probably making more use of the microwave than any other utensil, and prepackaged food as the main ingredients. Serving precooked bacon (I can make the difference between some fresh pan-roasted bacon and the precooked one) on a chewy piece of... More

I have been to the Downtowner quite a few times, and always happy. I have only given four out of five, because of the prices, and my order was a little soggy on the side. ( just better pickle placement will fix this.) I also got my order to go, and they are VERY quick. The workers there are fun... More
