Recess: A gem in SoBro

Like going home to Mom's every night only Mom is a gourmet chef. Menu changes daily and if you don't like what's on the menu then you'll be hungry. Chances are that if you are a foodie, you'll like what's on the menu. The chef is an institution in Indy!

Of course that is a personal opinion but that's what you want, isn't it? Is it expensive? That depends on your budget and other dining experiences. $60 for a beautiful four course dinner is inexpensive by many standards- don't try finding that value in NYC or London or maybe even Chicago. We felt that the 'wine by the bottle' was... More

A few days ago we attended a friend's birthday dinner at Recess with five other couples. We occupied a private room and were served a remarkable five course prix fixe dinner with wine pairings. The wine choices were excellent. Service was impressive and friendly. This is thankfully not a stuffy, formal establishment - it's fun! The menu changes nightly with... More

We had dinner here the day after Thanksgiving. I have a suspicion that the chef was not in his best form that day Our friends recommended this place as a great experience, so we had high expectations, but every dish had a flaw, which was noticeable to a foodie. The tuna tartar with avocado cucumber sushi had too much wasabi... More

Go to Recess if you like the idea of surprise, and you're OK with few choices! The chef prepares incredible seasonal delicious four course pre-fixe dinners that are different every day. I'd tell you what we had but it most likely will not be on the menu when you visit. Believe me, foodies...if you enjoy tasty perfectly paired and sized... More

This is an amazing amazing restaurant. It's really nice to let the chef decide what you will eat, and it was delicious. We got to meet the chef, and he was very kind and happy. The area is great, the food is great, the service is great... nothing bad to say about Recess!!

I found it very exciting to just have the chef decide the menu. It was excellent. The flavor layers were amazing - yes I sound like a foodie but it really was layered flavors. We had the wine pairings also and it was great. Certainly wines I knew nothing about but I will look for. The place is very casual... More

This was our first visit to Recess. When we went there was a $58 four-course offering. The first course was ceviche, the second was halibut, the third was beef, and the fourth was a very nice salted caramel pudding. Everything was good. Service was very good and the room is pleasant.

This is the third or fourth time here. The menu we had recently was ok but nothing top exciting. The quality of food is excellent but I didn't honk to interesting. The wine list is good and the service is excellent

This is by far the best restaurant in Indianapolis. It is a fixed menu with a few options available but the whole idea of it is to experience new things. I love going and having an amazing meal of things that I wouldn't necessarily order from a menu (mostly because of limited experience with some dishes). It's a controlled adventure... More
