It's the Indiana liquor laws which hurt this place

As I was with my underage son, we sat in a rather dull upstairs dining room. Service was adequate, filet mignonette was grilled perfectly - medium rare on request. The strip steak was average. The Guiness was one of the best I've had stateside. I wish there were more local beer options. So between... read more

A colleague and I were looking for a quiet place to catch up after business meetings downtown. I had never been to downtown Bloomington before, but he suggested the Irish Lion. We ducked in on a later Thursday afternoon and had a most pleasant time conversing at their beautiful old bar and marveling at the great selection of whiskeys, and... More

Previously, my experience at The Irish Lion did not meet my expectations and honestly, I did not know if I would ever give the restaurant another opportunity. Taking advantage of the DevourBTown.org restaurant promotion, I enjoyed Coddle, Duck with apple fennel bread stuffing, with baked apple and Brandon potatoes, and Irish Apple Walnut Cake for dessert. The waitstaff was friendly... More

We were staying at a hotel across the street and just wanted a relaxing bite. Great beer to start off dinner. Had beef mushroom soup and salad at a very reasonable price. Comfort food on a snowy night.

I dined here twice in the past 10 days. The first time was after midnight, so I credit them with kudos for serving this late. The fish and chips were decent, but not great--no complaints given the late hour. It is a fun place, and offers an authentic Irish bar atmosphere. The second time was with a larger group at... More

Thank you for your comments. The Cheesecake Factory’s Shepherd’s Pie, made with ground beef, is a dinner entrée @ $14.50. The Irish Lion’s Shepherd’s Pie, made with lamb ($9+ lb.), is not a dinner entrée, and listed on the menu as “Pub Grub” @ $9 with a salad. The Pub Grub item, Mutton Pie is served in a bread bowl,... I have always loved the Irish Lion. Their food is close to authentic, their 'soda bread' nice and sweet :) (It is actually closer to Irish Brown bread, as soda bread is white bread, many times with currants or raisins.) And they serve beer by the "yard". This is a great place for groups. Service can be slow. During our... More

Historic building with two levels, huge oak bar, good Celtic music playing in the background, in the heart of Bloomington's downtown west end. To say this restaurant's food and atmosphere is a tradition is needless; voted best place to take your parents for dinner from IU students. Only complaint: crowded, tight spaces, small tables, not much room to swing a... More

My wife and I really enjoy eating at well-maintained, vintage buildings and the Irish Lion has a very nice Old World ambiance. Better yet, the food is very good and the service excellent. We were there at lunch. My wife had the chicken wrap which she really enjoyed. It was a very generous serving - half of it went home... More

That's right if you love Irish food this is THE place. Old Irish atmosphere and great wait staff. Food is good too! Especially the Chicken and fish. And the Irish soda bread is great.

Having just visited Ireland a few months ago, I decided to give this place a shot while in town for work. it did not disappoint. Great atmosphere, very helpful staff and terrific food. I enjoyed their prime rib, cooked exactly as requested and a few pints at the beautiful bar. I certainly hop to return some day!
