My husband comes to Bloomington every year for work and every time we visit Mandalay. I used to say nothing but great things and considered it one of my favorite places to eat. The food was excellent, service pleasant and quick. The place has a tacky décor but it never bothered me since everything else was so great. We went... More

They never disappoint. Unfortunately Bloomington is lacking in good Chinese food. Although Mandalay is listed as Burmese, it comes closest to decent Chinese, with some dishes that remind me of Singapore and Malaysia (as well as Burma). Try the Mandalay Special Platter (Assorted Appetizers - 4 samosa, 2 fried egg roll, and 2 Mandalay fritter served with chili and sweet... More

This tiny eatery in Bloomington offers friendly service and delicious Asian food in a casual college setting. The curries we tried were very flavorful and spiced to the degree we had requested. We would gladly eat there again. They might not serve alcohol, so don't go expecting to have a brew with your beef curry. But don't let that keep... More

First of all, there were no negatives. Everything was fine and the prices aren't as high as many in that area. It's not a bad value. My only criticism is that in that same area are better places to enjoy a dining experience. The food was good. I give very high marks to their sauces. And maybe we just got... More

We were looking for an ethnic restaurant while in Bloomington, IN and searched in the 4th Street area. There are several options, all located in converted houses............very charming. The options were very good, as there is a Turkish, Thai, and Mexican establishment right down the street. We chose Mandalay as we were seeking Asian. The springrolls were delicious. They came... We never had any Burmese food at all,a nd tried this. I got a salmon with spicy tamarind sauce; my husband had catfish with gneger garlic sauce. I requested no salt because of my high blood pressure, and they accommodated my request. The serving is sufficient to feel satiety. Very quick service, no long wait at all. We went there... More

My husband and I first visited in search of Pho soup. We were delighted to find such lovely Pho and other fresh, delicious dishes. We returned with our daughters (8 & 12) and they loved choosing new foods from the menu. The owner/chef came to meet our family and chatted for a bit. This is a cozy, homey restaurant with... More

I eat here just about every time I visit Bloomington.... about 4-5 times per year. The food is authentic Burmese. The proprietors are very warm hosts and they always treat us well. The tea leaf salad is something we always order... excellent! The unique mild Burmese curries are wonderful. They do take-out, too.

We tried two dishes: fish cakes in a red tamarind sauce and vegetable curry. We also had an appetizer of tea leaf salad. I was new to Burmese food, but found it to be a little too salty and heavy on the fish sauce compared to Thai. The salad needed a squirt of lime to counteract the heavy garlic and... More

I love many of the Asian restaurants in Bloomington, but had not yet eaten at Mandalay. So when we visited in July we decided to give it a try. Neither I nor my family was impressed with the food. Was it bad? No, but neither was it good.
