Taste of the South

This restaurant's white pie was listed as an iconic food must in an Illinois travel magazine so we decide to stop for lunch while traveling home to Chicago on I57 in southern Illinois. Don't let the basic exterior of this cafe fool you. The food is awesome. There is not a lot of choices for restaurants close to the hotel we were staying at, we went looking for some place to eat and happened upon this cafe. We were expecting just average tasting food, we were wrong! The chicken salad was one of... More

Mashed potatoes from a box, dry cornbread, pre-formed hamburger patty not so great...but the meatloaf, green beans and Lima beans were good! Go figure. And the sweet tea was great. The white pie? Average. Not too sweet but nothing to write home about. We wouldn't go back if we were in the area.

Burton's Café is one of Southern Illinois' hidden jewels. The food is home cooked, always fresh and hot and the servings are very generous. The servers always make you feel welcome, whether you're a regular local or just passing through. My husband and I dine at Burton's frequently and have never had anything that wasn't delicious. Our favorite is the... More

We eat here several times a week. The fried chicken is really good!!! But always save room for a piece of homemade pie! Delicious!!!!

My wife, who grew up in the area and ate here frequently when she was at Rend Lake College 40 years ago, took me here for dinner. It should tell you something that it's been around for a long time. All of the food was tasty, and we especially enjoyed the catfish, which was cooked just right. They have a... More

Can't really choose which was worse - the food or the service. 'Burton' burger was pretty much uneatable - no taste, greasy burger, bacon and grilled onions were like rubber; fries semi-cold and all stuck together. When I sat down the 'server' asked immediately what I wanted - gave me no chance to look at the menu but pushed the... More

What a great diner. We had the fried chicken and roast beef. Very very good. Met the owner - what a nice gentleman. We were there on a Sunday at noon and the place was packed. They are closed on Mondays. Would definitely eat there again. Also the Staff were very friendly.

Against the advice of our local relatives, we wanted to try Burton's but wee sorely disappointed. The corn bread tasted like soap (really), the catfish was tasteless, the chicken and dumplings were mediocre (ours at home are better), the service was average. Then came the white pie, which was average at best. The custard pie was tasteless. The sides were... More
