Food not a winner but nice atmosphere and great location for walks

We stopped here by chance on the way back from Cambridge; had our dog in the car and were looking for a pub where dogs are allowed and with a nice park close by. The girl behind the bar was very friendly and our order arrived quickly- both ordered a Ploughman's. It just wasn't up to the standard we... read more

Great food from this warm little unassuming pub. No frills but great fish of gargantuan proportions and lovely beer batter on my Good Cod Almighty sized fish that tasted "Just out of the Sea fresh and softky flakey.Great home made Chips and garden (or mushy) peas. I loved it and cannot wait to take my wife there Yummie! Bon appetit!

I came here on the recommendation from my aunt. A small pub with lots of charm and a really nice menu. Big portions too. Well worth a visit. In the summer its nice to sit in the pub garden with a nice view over london.

The Sunday roasts on offer were excellent to eat and very good value. Good idea offering three meal sizes with prices that match the portions. Family group of five, all adults,of which four of us had the small meal and one a medium. The small meal was certainly generous with a large selection of vegetables and a large Yorkshire pudding! Very... More

I was beginning to wonder if my standards were unreasonably high. Trying to find a pub that ticks all the boxes you expect is a rare thing. Most pub food is average at best. Most service, ditto. This pub is quite dinky in size which makes it feel intimate. There are two inside areas- the main part with some tables and... More

Came on the recommendation of a friend and enjoyed this small, friendly, country pub. Staff were friendly, parking across the road was easy, food was tasty and was enjoyed by everyone. Portion sizes were a bit larger than we could manage so there was a bit of waste but nevertheless, it was good wholesome fare. We ordered the haloumi, crab,... More

We were looking for somewhere nice to take friends out after Xmas, and we wanted something in the countryside near Waltham Abbey. This pub looked ideal - a short drive, right by Epping Forest, looking out on trees and nature. It is lovely, old-fashioned and unspoilt inside - unlike so many modernised pubs. The Horsehoes has open fires, wooden tables... More

Our perty of four had a great lunch here in the gap between Xmas and New Year. They specialise in fresh fish. Two of us had fish pie, one had haddock and I had an enrmous Dover sole. All excellent. Nice setting just outside the urban sprawl where the Essex countryside begins. Pleasant and efficient staff. And if fish is... More

We arrived at 2pm, and waited for around 10 minutes. Not so bad they were very busy. The food was great and reasonably priced. I would go back.
