if the bandito starts moving, no more margaritas for you!

Look for the bright yellow building! The food is based on Tex-Mex family recipes.....very fresh and tasty. There is a life-size "bandito" mannequin in the dining room -- if he starts to move, they say it's time to stop the margaritas. Plenty of parking in front and on the west side of the... read more

I've been visiting El Bario for years and I've settled into a routine. I always order the Beef Enchiladas Picadillo Dinner and I have them make it with three habanero peppers chopped-up finely and mixed in with the beef. It's nice and warm and the only downside comes from the downside the next day (if you get my drift!) But... More

We were headed to another Mexican restaurant, and found it to be out of business, so El Barrio was our second choice. It should have been our first choice. The ambiance was nicer, the food was better, and the margaritas, were very tasty.. My only complaint is that the new wave for chefs, is to "stack" things up. My chimicanga... More

Had the good fortune to try this place, and found it to be more than reported. The margaritas were on special, and very good. They were so good that we ordered another round. Then the food arrived quickly, and presentation was alright. I am against all this "stacking" that seems to be the rage among chefs. My chimichangas were stacked,... More

I'm amazed at some of the reviews I've seen for this place. I'm not even Hispanic and I can cook Mexican cuisine far superior to this restaurant. I ordered the chimichanga dinner. The only fresh ingredient on the plate was a bit of lettuce and tomato. The refried beans were obviously canned and of poor quality. The guacamole was avocado... More

We were with business associates/friends and had no idea why this picked this place as we drove to it, but after the food came, I get it. The service (it was a VERY quiet weeknight) was great, and the food was fantastic. It helps to have no expectations, but now that I set them high for anyone that reads this,... More

My wife and I stopped here again for drinks and dinner. For 37 years, the Arebalo Family has delighted palates with Mexican home-style & Tex-Mex cuisine. Mr. Arebalo brought the family recipes from San Antonio back in the 80's. We both started off with a "Gold Margarita". It was one of the best margaritas we have had in the Chicagoland... More

I'm surprised by the other reviews. We stopped in here on a recent Saturday for lunch and the place was pretty quiet. Haven't seen a Mexican place advise that they charge extra for a second basket of chips before ($1.25). The salsa had no heat, the guacamole didn't seem to have anything other than avocado and tomato. The hard shell... More

Born and raised on the Texas / Mexico border. Moved up here for work and have never found good Tex-Mex in 5 years until I found El Barrio....I didn't want dinner to end. Outstanding! And the service was excellent too.
