I find that for the price, you get a way better quality of food, service, and atmosphere at the Alamo. Mainly the quality of food though and that's the important thing! I recommend their martinis, steaks, salad, and desserts!

I had the sirloin with the bullet bite sauce. The sauce was pretty tasty. My steak fries weren't very good, thank goodness I could dip them in the bullet sauce. You have to ask for dinner rolls if you want them. I was seated in a dank, dark alcove all by myself. The waitress was pleasant, although, the service was... More

This is the place to unwind after a day on the interstate. The atmosphere is unique, and the staff (our server was Kelsey) goes out of their way to welcome first-timers. The menu is varied and invites repeated visits. The lobster pincher appetizer is delicious and a real surprise for a restaurant so far from New England.

Too "Mattoonish". All the people that have lived in Mattoon forever and who really think they are important go there. Their food lacks flavor, seasoning, and taste. Much better choices in town. Even when they aren't busy, the hostesses are always rude and ask if you have reservation and are so shocked that you didn't call to make one.

I've eaten at the Alamo numerous times, when staying in/near the Mattoon area. It never seems to change. The food is very Midwestern average, with a strong preponderance of steak dishes. I've also had chicken and salmon there. All are fine; none are special. There are many Martini flavors to choose from. I've had several and they were quite tasty... More

Steak house so I ordered a rib eye the first time we stayed. Thin cut and not even close to medium rare. Next time we were there I ordered the prime rib. Medium well this time and noticeably nuked. We'll probably try somewhere else next time through Mattoon.

We had reservations after our daughter's graduation from EIU. There was a party of six, all with different tastes and food desires. Upon entering, I thought it might be another "Texas"-style place. But, happily, it was a comfortable atmosphere with an excellent menu ranging from chicken-fingers to salmon to prime rib to anything you might desire. Everyone ordered something different,... More
