Negatives (stemming from the small size of the restaurant): 1. There can be a VERY long wait to be seated. 2. It is extremely noisy -- to the point of discomfort. 3. The tables are very close together, so that you can't help but hear others' conversations. 4. It appears that it is difficult to accommodate groups larger than four.... More

I'm usually not this far up north but today I just happened to be in the neighborhood so I decided to check out Tamales. I heard about this place on the radio a few weeks back. They mentioned they had duck tacos and this is really all I've been able to think about since. It's small inside and was packed... More

The food and drinks are great. The service can be slowed as the restaurant gets busy which happens at the usual times. During these times the waiters can be rushed. The room is a bit cramped. They don't accept reservations so at high tide there is quite a wait and customers often often leave rather than endure it. The atmosphere... More

There may be more authentic family places around, but Hot Tamales is consistently at the top with respect to good food and good service. The outdoor seating is also very nice in the summer. You can order a range of food, including creatively prepared fish and salads. Hot Tamales is everything that Casa del Isaac isn't. . . with great... More

We ended up at Tamales because our regular Mexican restaurant in Highland Park (La Casa de Isaac and Moishe) was closed on Saturday. We are INCREDIBLY happy we did because Tamales is just as good as La Casa, if not better. In fact, from my experience eating at a range of Mexican restaurants, this is probably the best Mexican restaurant... More

We've been to Hot Tamales several times and the food is plentiful and consistently good. When it's busy the service gets a little slow and the restaurant a little noisy - not unexpected but not good if you're in a hurry or wanting to talk to others at your table. If you pick the right times to go this is... More

Tamales is a little hole in the wall with great food and great, friendly service. I love their chimichangas and their margaritas are the best. On the weekends, I usually try to get their a little early to beat the rush because there can be line. The expanded outdoor seating in the summer makes it a little easier to get... More

From reading other reviews, I gather that Tamales has a wide range of Mexican food, but how can you anything but a tamale at a placed named "Tamales". I ordered the pumpkin and and chicken tamales and was very glad I did. These tamales are in complete contrast to the usual greasy tamale with a dry cornmeal dough exterior. The... More

Consistently good local Mexican restaurant. Over the years I've been to this restaurant more than a dozen times, and I've never had a bad meal

Everything on the menu is quite good here - 5 steps up from typical Mexican fare. Prices are reasonable and service is good. There are always tables of families here, so kids enjoy it too. Salmon burrito and bread pudding are very good, as is the pumpkin tamale and the guacamole.
