Great little spot in downtown Elgin

My wife and I had been to Al's a few years ago to enjoy a milkshake and burger and found it to be quite good. We returned a few months ago for a meal and were very surprised by the dinner menu. That night we ate upstairs and we loved the setting of being in a building over 100 years... read more

This restaurant is known for it's milk shakes. Our family had a variety of flavors and everyone enjoyed them. Thick and tasty. Nice menu, but have not had a meal yet.

This small restaurant a block from the river in downtown Elgin is truly a gem. It has limited seating during the winter (with outdoor cafe dining during the warner months according to the friendly staff). With a name like Al's Cafe I expected much less than we received. The food was exceptional. I enjoyed the blackened salmon topped with Blue... More

Food is very fresh and always good. Very consistent. Soups are always great with half sandwich. Never ever leave here without the signature Burn's Malt or shake

Als is just one of those places that makes you proud to be an Elginite. From their signature sandwiches to the shakes and malts so thick you can eat with a fork to Tony's monthly dinner themes, all in a very comfortable, neighborhood place. My faves -- tuna deluxe, strawberry shake, and crab cakes.

We went to Al's to celebrate a birthday and wanted something special. Al's is that place. There were 8 of us. Since we went during lunch time on a Sunday, it wasn't crowded. The restaurant is in an old historical home in downtown Elgin. My reuben sandwich was homemade and very tasty. It cost around $9.00 including fries or chips... More

I had just finished a very good meal for dinner. Our server asked if I was going to have any ice cream. I initially said "No," but my wife talked me into placing an order. OMG, was it good. These guys have the best ice cream I have ever esaten, hands down.

If you're in the mood for a great malt or shake, they're the best. Lunch or sandwiches always good. Dinner menu has constants and seasonal specials. Nice value for a good steak diiner.

I love the atmosphere and the option to eat outdoors weather permitting. I have never had a bad meal there.
