Go for the shakes and malts!

I love the beautiful old building Al's is located in. The food is good and the ice cream drinks are amazing! In the summer, it is fun to sit outside on the patio. Al's is an authentic Elgin experience!

Al's is in a charming historic building in downtown Elgin, IL decorated with many authentic antiques. Menu items include a wide variety of salads and sandwiches, as well as dinner entrees. Also some nice looking desserts and their famous "not-to-be-forgotten" malts. There is a nice outside area, but there were bees about on the day we were there. Service was... More

This was a "find" as my wife and I had just arrived in Elgin, Illinois while traveling to Wisconsin to see relatives. It was a chilly night so the attractive patio near the entrance door was not feasible. Once inside, we were brought upstairs to a quiet table near a window. Then the fun began. The menu left us having... More

Beautiful historic building is only eclipsed by the glory that is the chocolate / marshmallow malt. If I had three thumbs - they'd all be up!!

Above average food but excellent malts. They also have a nice dinner menu. It's a small place with an old fashioned decor. Nothing fancy but you will not be disappointed.

I've been going to Al's for years.. Always have great food and lovely service. I recently tried their Mediterranean Salmon, and it was by far the best I've ever had! The presentation was excellent and believe me it tasted better than it looked. Can't wait to go back and order it again!

My boyfriend and I had dinner there a few weeks ago and we both had the steak sirloin and it was cooked PERFECTLY! I like my steak more on the medium rare side where as my boyfriend likes it more on the well side but it was still very moist and tender. Our waitress Presley was super fun, spunky, and... More

I have tried several items on the menu and they are all just ok. Never had anything that I just had to have a second time. Don't get me wrong the food is good just doesn't leave a lasting impression. Downtown Elgin is in need of some great restaurants. It is easy to be number one when you really don't... More

Ate here a couple of times, food has always been good, and like the setup. Service varies though. Last time we were there for lunch, and were few people in restaurant upstairs when got there, but food took surprisingly long to arrive. Other tables who'd arrived and ordered after us got their food before we did, and service not that... More

Al's Cafe and Creamery has been around in downtown Elgin for decades. I had lived here in the '80s, and moved back, and was delighted to see that it was still open. It's right in the heart of downtown in a historic building, and has a great ambiance. The food is creative, and there are monthly "themes" in the menu... More
