Every time we are in Chicago, it has become a tradition to have lunch at the Half Shell. Our favorites are the salads, shrimp, frog legs, crab cakes as well as a good offering of beers. The menu features many other fish and seafood offerings. We always go for lunch as the place gets very busy in the evenings...........not a... More

You would not expect this good quality food in an underground location. But Half Shell honors it's close to 50 years in business at the same location. Fresh oysters, fantastic king crab and crab legs...... And plenty of beer..... Highly recommended.

If you want good, well priced seafood in Chicago, this is the place. The portions are large and it has a divey, homegrown kinda atmosphere. It's small, so plan to wait unless it's nice out, in which case, there's a patio seating area!

We had lunch here (warning - prices are identical to dinner) recently in search of one of our favorite Midwest fish: Yellow Lake Perch. The meal came with a generous portion of french fries and 8 nice-sized (6 inche +/-) fillets deep fried and tartar sauce. The dish was hot an flavorful, lacking only the melted butter normally seen with... More

Visited in the depths of Chicago winter so no dining al fresco. Instead you descent down steep steps to a hot and steamy bar, crowded and noisy. There appeared to be at least 4 groups of post-game football supporters, the bar area was packed. All very atmospheric and completely non-threatening. Our fellow diners seemed to want to chat to the... More

Appetizers, awesome. The food, outstanding. The atmosphere ok. It's in the basement of an old brown stone. Seating is limited. We've been going there for thirty years.

Yeah, it's a basement dive bar, but the food is REALLY good. Eleven tables and a bunch of seats at the bar. Cash only--no credit cards, no checks. Men cannot wear hats inside, and if you have armpit hair, your shirt must have sleeves. You won't be seated until your entire party is there. If you're okay with these rules... More

Saw this place when out walking and thought I'd try it as I love my seafood... The place - it is truly a dive (but that's not the cause for my low rating ) the man behind the bar vaguely motioned us to a table for 2.....and another middle aged man came over with 2 a4 laminated menus. Waved to... More

The Half Shell remains unchanged since the late 50's, and boy does it look like it! But let's face it, you're not coming for the decor, right? If you are, you're in the wrong place. What you come for is the seafood. Piles of steaming King Crab that melt in your mouth. Delicious oysters to start off your meal. A... More

The Half Shell is lovcated at Diversey and Orchard in Lakeview directly acroos the street from Pier One. They are located on the lower level of a Brownstone and they have been there since 1958. This place is all about seafood. They only have 48 seats but a 20 seat bar. No frills here, just great seafood. Cash Only, no... More
