Not bad if someone else is paying for it

Have been here twice on business dinners. The food is fine, but I don't feel it is worth the effort or cost to get here. Both times, we sat downstairs in a crappy little room with no heat looking up at the street as people walk by--yet the rest of the place was almost empty. For all I know, the... read more

Treated to dinner here for the first time by friends who live in the area. We were initially struck by the quaint building which appears to be an older brownstone. We were seated on the second floor in front of a lovely picture window. The ambiance was absolutely perfect. Low key, comfortable and elegant with absolutely no pretense. The cuisine... More

It is a pleasure to dine here, where the menu is extensive, and the service is outstanding. The food is well-prepared. We selected the pasta which was magnificent. There are both whole wheat and ancient Egyptian grain pastas available in addition to the traditional types.

Man, oh man. Where do i start? Merlo on Maple is simply amazing. The owners (and chef) moved to Chicago from Bologna, Italy and started the restaurant based on family recipes. Everything that everybody in our party had was awesome! We were swapping bites all night. Beyond the food, the service was top notch. Our waiter, Sam was the best!... More

When you enter this "house" there is a room off the hall to the left that serves as a lovely, cosy bar; a nice place to have a drink i you arrive early or if you are lucky enough to get in just to have a drink in the bar - it's a treat. We were taken upstairs to the... More

Beautiful restaurant in an old Chicago house turned restaurant. Food was awesome! We eat here often. Mostly in October when they receive October White Truffles from Italy! Northern Italian.

This place is a little gem. Fabulous Italian food like you'd get in a really good European restaurant. Normal portions that you can actually finish and enjoy finishing! Even room for dessert. Eggplant parmigiana was top class. Fish, pasta , interesting salads, amazing deserts all wonderful. Great wines great service great atmosphere. Not cheap but you will be guaranteed a... More

It was a cold and windy night over Halloween when we went to Chicago to see the David Bowie exhibit. We were so thrilled with the great service, wonderful wine, and spectacular food at Merlo on Maple we have it on our list for a return trip next month.

We were looking for Italian and the Merlo on Maple was just around the corner from where we were staying. The Trip Advisor reviews were on target as we enjoyed our dinner and time together. The waiter was very helpful in suggesting dinner specials. With truffles in season we could not go wrong. The menu is Bolognese as the owners... More

This little gem is a house tucked in between big buildings. The bar is cozy with excellent wines and highballs. Dinner was so special, we enjoyed every bite of food. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered the OssoBuco my husband had the Seafood special, a stew of seafood. I also ordered a salad and we had appetizers. For... More
