Japonais by Morimoto offers its guests the signature cuisine of (Iron Chef) Masaharu Morimoto; a seamless blend of Japanese and Western techniques brought together to create exciting new flavors and culinary experiences. With brand new enhancements, designed by the timeless Jeffrey Beers International, our restaurant features two distinct dining rooms and among the new and exciting additions to our dramatic yet classic 10,000 sq. ft. space are a sushi bar backed by an open kitchen where Chef Morimoto’s signature omakase menus are prepared and Shochu / Sake bar which features Chef Morimoto’s own line of shochu, sake and craft beers.

food good, waitstaff intrusive and condescending

the title says a lot about the restaurant. yes, it's expensive (and seems dedicated to separating patrons from their money), but i don't believe that anyone goes in unawares. sushi and sashimi were fresh and tasty. other dishes have sufficient flair. a decent wine list, but it's disconcerting that... read more

Been here twice now. First time, great experience, second time so so. Starting with cocktails in the bar downstairs on our first visit the barman was extremely good and got us trying mezcal based cocktails, second time round barlady was a little slow and non-proactive. On both occasions the food was fantastic, cannot recommend the toro tartare enough. The waiting... More

Design of restaurant is modern night club cheese cake factory-esque. Unabashedly disconnected from classical French and traditional Japanese cuisines in terms of both service and food. Nothing is sacred. Like a strange episode of iron chef, one wonders what would become of things if they didn't have to work with bad ingredients. What happened to Morimoto?

This was a Father's Day gathering and we had a previous meal a year ago at the Honolulu Morimoto's, and they are both equally phenomenal. The food was outstanding. My only issue was that two of us had the tasting menu, which I highly recommend, and three of us had meals. The timing of "the meals" delivery was pretty poor... More

We had a group dinner at Japonais. As we were a bigger group I pre-selected a menu. Everybody enjoyed the variety of differenz amazing taste of all the delicious dishes. One minor thing to suggest: please add also a sushi -offer into the 3-course menu, otherwise everybody was happy satisfied with the service and food! I am looking forward to... More

We were sent here on the recommendation of a friend and were not disappointed. The ambience is great. We were not dressed up and would have enjoyed ourselves more if we were but just "popped in" after shopping and museums all day. We stopped in a 5:00 so there wer plenty of tables and our waitstaff was outstanding and friendly.... More

The best I tried in Chicago for the few days I went not wanting to wander much due to cold weather went to the sure thing. Bar is nice to have a drink before dinner then the presentation of the food especially the toro tartar is almost a piece of art things like these hard to find in Japanese restaurants.... More

On a rainy and cold Chicago night, we were warmed by Japanese whiskey infused with literally the smoke of a most curious set of spices -- very creative, and very good. The food was also best described in the same way -- neat takes on spices and textures, the food was not just delicious, but interesting. I thought the service... More

As with other Morimoto restaurants, the food did not disappoint. Very creative, delicious dishes that were a joy to see and eat. However, the service was horrific. We sat for 15 minutes without having a server approach us. When we stopped someone, his comment was "I saw the drinks on your table and thought someone else was serving you." After... More

The desserts were a highlight...artful, fun and delicious. The sushi was quite good, of course. The Angry Chicken was just okay. We were a bit disappointed with the decor in comparison to Chef Morimoto's Honolulu and NYC restaurants. The Chicago location is pretty ordinary. However, next time, we will try to get a table outdoors by the Chicago River because... More
