A birthday Treat!

Some friends took me out here for my birthday. The ambiance is amazing, food is lovely. We had sushi and some asian flaired starters.

High Quality Sushi They have a lot of quality sushi, from several tunas to several salmons. The medium fat tuna is outstanding (better than the toro), although there is an appetizer of Toro that I totally recommend, as well as king crab. All the sushi I tried was very good. It is not cheap but if you want to limit... More

I have been to Japonais twice a few years ago and the food WAS excellent but sadly that is no longer true. The food was average if not fair. I get better sushi rolls at the grocery store. The service was poor and took a long, long time to get a drink or place our order for food. The atmosphere... More

We dined with friends this past Friday night. It was a warm summer night and our first visit to this restaurant. We were greeted warmly and went downstairs to have a drink while we waited for our friends. The downstairs is elegant, reminding me of South Beach. When our friends arrived, we decided to dine downstairs, right along the river.... More

This is my second time dining at Japonais. I love the ambiance of this restaurant, very classy. Our table was not yet ready when we arrived and our party headed down to the bar. We ordered drinks and I decided to stick to anything gin. I ordered the St. Thomas and this drink reminds me of a Tom Collins done... More

Went there for anniversary on a Friday evening. We had the pick of alot of great tables. Julio was our waiter and he was training a delightful young intern. The Sashimi Platter are priced at 40/80/120 and we chose the $80 which provided about 24 pieces. Along with a Calif roll, it was plenty. The sashimi was so fresh and... More

We have tried all the Chicago Magazine "best sushi" blah blah blah. This place wins hands down. Fresh. Great omikaze menu. Excellent wines. Servers are knowledgeable and attentive. And the chocolate dessert thing is sublime. Eat here

I don't understand why this restaurant has so many negative reviews, we've visited twice and were not disappointed at all. Fresh seafood carefully prepared, and flavorful sushi; steak was good (maybe not the best ever) but definitely not a reason to complain about. Original desserts. Wine list won't let you down, and yes, be prepared to pay for what you... More

We have been to Japponais on previous visits to Chicago and it was fabulous. It has since been purchased by Morimoto and what a disappointment! The unique items are no long offered (eg, spicy mono), they wouldn't make anything custom and the sushi wasn't even better than we get at our neighborhood sushi place back home. Servers seemed in a... More

Very understaffed, the food was simply average. All blow and no show! A kind waitress but there needed to be 3 of her...we sat about 30+ minutes with nothing. I vote a "no" My review is generous for what we received.
