Unimpressive from the outside but loved the atmosphere: lots of noise and activity. Nothing fancy in the décor or the table settings. Photos of "celebrities" on the walls. Waiters in white shirts and black ties. Service is fast, maybe almost to the point of rushed. Food topnotch and portions ridiculously large. Dinner for two: shared app, two entrees and a... More

Been here many, many times. We live nearby. This restaurant is off the tourist beaten track and is a gem known by locals. It looks like a hole in the wall with unassuming decor, but if you like Italian food and are in Chicago, don't miss it. It is simply the best Italian food you will ever taste.

Best Pasta Fagiole soup in the U.S. Great pastas and excellent service. My favorite restaurant in Chicago by far. Buon Apettito.

This is a very small place, as other reviewers have mentioned. We went on a Sunday evening, which was extremely busy. The service was VERY slow and the noise level high. I had the lasagna and my husband had spaghetti and meatballs. He loved his dinner - I thought mine lacked flavor - though the sauce was obviously quite fresh.... More

One of the best restaurant we visited in Chicago. This place had a real Italian vibe to it. Really small though and for what I hear is always packed. It was that night. I had some really good ravioli there ! And the prices where not too crazy !

So glad that I went to this restaurant after reading reviews on Trip Advisor. A great place...huge portions of very yummy and fresh food; tons of staff waiting on you with a constant but not annoying fashion; grilled calamari was such a treat. I had a pasta with sausage and rapini that was a bit spicey, really flavorful and enough... More

La Scarola is very small and as good as it is small. Very well prepared high quality Italian cuisine and wines will do you proud. Great place for romance or business. Worth the wait.

I am just baffled by the good reviews. The place is worn down and in desperate need of remodeling. The back room smells of cigars from the 1950's. The celebrities on the wall are mostly dead or in nursing homes. The seating is extremely packed and uncomfortable. The people at the next table had to stand up so we could... More

Colleagues from Chicago took us here for a dinner while we were in town, and it was outstanding. It beat just about any Italian restaurant I have been to, short of Italy itself. The Pasta e Fagioli soup wa absolutely outstanding. It is a meal in itself, and you could taste the chicken broth, tomatoes, cheeses and spices separately, and... More
