Good food in a stereo-type Chicago setting

Stopped here with a buddy of mine during a train trip from DC to Wisconsin. My buddy had a meatloaf dinner and I went with the club sandwich. Both meals were very good and had the feel of homemade. Prices were reasonable and the service was great. You certainly won't go away hungry as the... read more

Always has and always will be one of my favorite restaurants. Excellent atmosphere, wonderful nostalgia, and a great breakfast that will leave you full and satisfied.

The beginning of Route 66. We were greeted at the door with doughnut holes. This restaurant is just plain fun! The history of the place is described on the menu, followed by trivia on a card on the table. Lou Mitchell's is a place rich in history. That's what made it so much fun. It's been in the movies. Three... More

Went in, were immediately greeted by staff who gave us crusted donut balls (really good) and escorted us to the table. Ordered scrambled eggs, with wheat toast, potatoes and bacon, with coffee and OJ, everything was good, specially the bacon (thicker cut and you can feel the wood flavor). My ordered eggs Benedict and she was very pleased as well.... More

I had a 5 hour wait for a train at Union Sttion, so I walked the one and a half blocks to the rstaurant. Got seated right away and had some of their famous donut holes. The menu was very complete. If you can't find something you want, you're probably not hungry. Speaking of hungry, the portions are plentiful. The food... More

We had breakfast here on the first day of our Route 66 trip and weren't disappointed. The service from Dawn our server was brilliant, the best service we had on our entire 2 1/2 week trip. The choice of food on the breakfast menu is amazing - it took us ages to decide!! The food was divine and the service... More

We had breakfast at 8 different restaurants while visiting Chicago. Lou Mitchell's Restaurant easily bested all the other places we visited. We arrived @ 7:20 on a Sunday morning. There was no line, and plenty of empty tables/booths. We were greeted by a friendly face and a warm donut hole that hit the spot! Arriving at our booth, we were... More

Just arrived at Union Station and was looking for a good place to stop. Spotted a Metra Police Officer and thought who would know better than someone that works directly in the area. Breakfast was enjoyable although pretty average food and service was very good. Off to the Air and Water Show!

At the start if Route 66 this is not to be missed, it really takes you back to the 50's. We arrived pretty much as soon as it opened for breakfast the queues formed fast so get there early. Our server Dawn was absolutely fantastic and after spending 3 weeks in the States I would say presented the best service... More
