We had been in Chicago for two days before starting our Route 66 journey, and for some reason I wasn't feeling it! Well after having breakfast at Lou Mitchell's I remembered everything I love about America, and it set us up for the big trip. It was packed out on a sunny Saturday morning but we weren't waiting long to... More

I have heard about Lou Mitchell's but had forgotten about it. I was in Chicago for work and had some time to kill, and as I was driving along Route 66, I ended up in Center City Chicago- and there was Lou Mitchell's with the flashing lights on my life. With ample on-street parking (at a steep fee-) I parked,... More

Super good homemade breakfasts. We had the bacon egg & cheese sandwiches with home fries- excellent!!!Fresh squeezed orange juice and really good coffee. Free munchkins when in line waiting!

This book was recommended by a travel guide for route 66 and what a place to visit.A typical american diner with a great atmosphere. We only had a coffee but the dishes that were being delivered to other tables looked delicious.

Flashing lights drew me in as I thought it was a Chicago icon. Food was okay, waitress was tired, and not very friendly. Hostess was very nice. I got a cookie to go, and didn't think it was anything special (they boast about their bakery on the marquee).

They made the best donuts I've ever tasted! It is a typical american cafe with many options to eat and a really great coffee. I have heard about this place in a blog, and I was surprised of the long queue of people waiting to have breakfast that were there when I came. But the wait is well worth it... More

Be prepared to stand in line. That's always a good sign. While waiting, you are given delicious little nuggets of goodness-homemade donut holes. The food was good, and definitely a good value. We are Cardinal fans, & was there for the game at Wrigley. The staff was awesome about getting the whole room involved about the Cubs VS the Cardinals!. Can't... More

Lou Mitchell's is a classic diner that's been around since 1923 for a reason. Everything was clean, fresh and welcoming. All of the staff were super friendly and seemed genuinely happy to be working there. The wait was only about 10 minutes on Saturday morning. The coffee was fabulous and you can take a lb home as a nice souvenir.... More

This place was one of our highlights while in Chicago-that's not to say Chicago was not that great but to emphasis how great this place is. The food is to die for, the staff some the best I have experienced on all my travels and value for money. It was the best possible start to route 66.
