Old Chicago

A trip back in time. Old style ambiance. Big portions of basic food. Very good lasagna and steaks. Nothing fancy. Prices a tad high. You go for the ambiance, not the food. Be sure to finish with a brandy ice and you'll leave happy.

I had a T-Bone and the asparagus, of course we know the steaks are world class, but I was shocked to experience the best asparagus I have ever tasted as well. Classic steaks, Waiters in White jackets. Looking forward to my next trip to Chicago and returning.

A bunch of us go every year and reserve a section of the restaurant for our party of about 70. Hard not to fill up on the high stacked shrimp, crab, lobster and oyster appetizer plate. If you still have room the steaks are absolutely amazing and cooked to perfection.

I'm a traveler and I love a good steak, so I make it a point to visit the nation's celebrated steakhouses when I'm in their town. Problem is that a lot of the old school steakhouses have developed a procedure which annoys me. I order a steak medium - pink, not red inside and it comes medium rare, with the... More

You want a steak....you get a steak. You want pasta...you get pasta. You want "chic" ambience you are in the wrong place. The best bone in rib eye I have had. Everyone raved about the prime rib or filet. The sides were also tasty...spinach, onion rings, potato. I knew I was in Chicago after one of the best meals of... More

I went to G&G on a business dinner with a large group. They say it is an "institution". While the service is extremely good, the food was very disappointing. The appetizers were below average, with the calamari being especially chewy and like rubber. I got the strip steak, supposedly medium rare. The steak was cooked medium, and while is was... More

My husband and I both come from food loving and wine drinking Italian families. So we were very excited to meet up with family here for a heartwarming and belly filling dinner. They will tell you the menu is not set up for family style meal other than the side dishes, but the serving portions are huge! Very easily I... More

Recommended by a local (who joined me). The atmosphere was classic old style Chicago Italian (straight out of a Capone movie). Very basic (you wanna da steak... How?). And it came with no frills either, but was cooked as ordered and was tasty (as one would expect). However service was rude. It must be possible to do better.

The wife and I dined there on a Wednesday night and as others have said the decor, ambience, and staff all exude Old Chicago style and attitude. We were looking forward to an outstanding dinner with comparable service. The service was as expected, attentive, discreet, and well informed both on the available dishes and the wonderful history of G &... More

Old school Italian in all the right ways. Dark panelling, vinyl-covered chairs, red linen napkins and professional waiters who make all the right recommendations. I had the most outrageous veal chop (vesuvio) and my husband had the bone-in rib eye. He never orders steak in a restaurant because he is frequently disappointed but said that was the best steak he... More
