Good Food, Small Plates, Great Staff

Everything about this place was great except I personally didn't care for the communal tables. David, our server, was genuine and fun and enhanced our experience. I would return if we were able to reserve a private table.

We were there for the NRA show, decided to go last minute so no reservations, we were a group of 8 with a baby, servers nightmare you think, split up on 2 tables back to back, no biggie we were just happy to be able to seat and eat... our food was delicious we tried just about everything on the... I know this is a meat centric place and their owner is a multi James Beard award winner (that helps!). My clients are serious carnivores; however, this place also remembers the vegetarians & pescatarians. English peas (I just liked ordering it!) outstanding. Avocado salad...with tahini!! Bread pudding...because my hips are just TOO small... Vacherin ( meringue, strawberries, whipped cream &... More

This place was amazing. We were seated at the bar after 7 or so. We spent the day at Wrigley field so needless to say we may have been a bit under dressed in our jeans, but we weren't thrown out. We ordered the bbq chicken and the pork belly which were out of this world. We couldn't decide on... More

They have food. Real food not covered in salt! But really, the food is quite good here and you should give it a try if you are sick of the overly greasy salty mess that seems to be served up everywhere else. I actually didn't really care for the communal seating, but as the financial/lawyer types cleared out, some regular... More

The Publican is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. We have been several times to both breakfast and dinner, and we are always full and happy! The menu is always changing with the season, most dishes are meant to be shared with the table. Make sure your dining guests are carnivores, and find sharing plates and table space fun!... More

More snap brim fedoras than a thirties gangster movie. The restaurant is located in the meat packing district and it is a perfect fit. We had the chefs pick special dinner. The food was interesting and well presented but I would have killed for a green salad. It's a large noisy space and lit up like a hospital operating room.... More

If you are a vegetarian, probably best to just skip this place. Came with a group, got a bunch of oysters, cured meats, cooked meats and beers. Surprisingly, the best thing we had was probably the cauliflower-- which is not to say the rest was not good, the cauliflower was exquisite. The inside is fun, with long communal tables surrounded... Weekend in Chicago we couldn't get dinner reservations so we had to do brunch. This was recommended by my friend Chef Tom Colicchio so we had to try it. We shared the red wine poached eggs and the avocado toast which was my favorite of the two. Service was great and the coffee was fresh. Must try "The Bacon" i... More

The Publican serves family plates stacked full of good food and ready to share. It's an interesting establishment with some nice tables outside (if the weather is good) and some enclosed tables inside (almost like a confession booth). In either case the food is good, plentiful, and reasonably expensive. Also some good value on the wine list. The ribeye is... More
