Description: The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style...
The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Carlyn Berghoff. At today’s Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it’s still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff’s wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's “tradition with a twist!” Private Dining - Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. Host your next event in one of our four private rooms. Contact us to start planning today!

Very good German Food!

Our family loves the Berghoff when we shop on State Street. Just a few blocks from Macy's its an easy walk and the German food offered at the Berghoff is tasty and filling. Our favorites were the Jager Schnitzel, the Reuben Sandwich and the Cajun Chicken Salad. A variety of Fresh Bread is... read more

I ate here 3 times with my boyfriend when staying in Chicago on holiday from the UK. I have to eat gluten free and was delighted with their gluten free menu. The food is so tasty (my boyfriend loved his food too). Staff are friendly and attentive and the restaurant itself looks very impressive and has a great atmosphere. I... More

I love German food and I love classic restaurants so how do I not go to Berghoff when it is right next to my hotel. OK, not fine dining by any stretch but the place is filled with history. Love the paneling. The place was full of tourists (oh wait, I was one too), but it was still fun. I... More

I went here for lunch with some colleagues, and over all, I enjoyed the store aspect of the hotel restaurant and the food was pretty good. My colleagues in Chicago recommended Berghoff because it's somewhat of a food destination. That seems to be pretty factual, since the table next to us was a large group of people on a Chicago... I've always found this place charming. I love its history and that it is still relevant after so many years. Our food was delicious. I had a modern twist on a BLT. The homemade breads were scrumptious as always. Our service wasn't the best this time around. It felt like our waiter was pretty new, and he had A LOT... More

Was in town for business and this was just down the street from my hotel so I decided to give it a try. Since I came in after 7 pm, seating was not a problem, got a corner table right away. The place is really nice, old world decor, just what you would expect from an old German restaurant. My... More

Gone are the days when the Berghoff was for men only & beef sandwiches were served to customers standing at tall tables--no chairs. We dined in a comfortable wood-paneled dining room with old-world charm but modern amenities. My sauerbraten was delicious.

One of Chicago's oldest restaurant, serving since 1898. They have marvelous German food that draws crowds at lunchtime...go off lunch time for a more relaxing meal. Then enjoy their great Root Beer and Bavarian (very large) pretzels, while waiting for your main course. The bread basket is filled with delicious treats to share. One of the main attractions are the... More

The Berghoff (NEVER "Berghoff's") has been a fixture in Chicago for over 100 years, started by Herman Berghoff as a saloon in which to sell the beer he and his brothers were brewing in Fort Wayne. The bar has been changed over time, but has only been admitting women since Gloria Steinem crashed it in 1968. The entire restaurant retains... More
