Description: The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Carlyn Berghoff. At today’s Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it’s still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff’s wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's “tradition with a twist!” Private Dining - Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. Let me start by saying that I grew up on German food, my father being German and having a lot of family from Germany. I've also traveled and eaten my way through Germany. So needless to say I was excited to eat at this restaurant given it's history and German roots. Let's start with the service. I came with a... More

Wonderful food -- love the Pretzel and bread. Went there for Lunch and service was a little shaky until we flagged one of the waiters (maybe not ours) She knew what to do, how to treat customers and what was excellent on the menu. Hence, the 5* was because of her service.

We have eaten here for many years. It was one of our favorites not any more. Twelve of us ate there, 9 were unhappy with their dinners. To start with the service was sooooo slow. The meals were cold. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were the day before maybe even instant. The red cabbages tasted as it was from... More

Very few of this type of restaurant is around today. It is not trendy, but food is very good. Old fashioned charm in an old fashioned German restaurant. Who could ask for more?

Hadn't been to the Berghoff in many years. I remember the food being very good, but there's a chance I was just younger then. My wife and I had reservations, which let us skip the long line that forms on weekends. She had a mixed drink and I had the house amber. Both were good, and reasonably priced for the... More

Great, authentic German ambience. It's really a part of old Chicago. Just don't expect much from the food. Ok sandwiches, terrible fish and chips. They make their own beer, which is ok (review by my son the beer expert).

We have been there and enjoyed it in the past, but we were now wondering if it had outlived itself; however, we were not disappointed; the service was a bit slow, but the food was just great and the atmosphere was fine also for a rather late dinner mid-week;

We had a very nice dinner here. Though I love German food and ordered a traditional German dish, my husband ordered a less ethnic meal with two special requests. They were very accommodating and attentive. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and also the atmosphere of the lively, inviting restaurant. It was also reasonably priced for a nice restaurant in... I had last been to The Berghoff in 1976, so naturally I wondered if anything had changed in 38 years. In a word, no. Perhaps the waitstaff is a bit more ethnically diverse, but the service is just as friendly, perhaps even more so; the food and décor, to the best of my recollection, are identical. I think I could... More

Being historic I thought the place might be 1) hard to get into and 2) expensive, but it was neither. The ambience was great, the service was attentive and friendly. The restaurant was busy but we ate from the dinner menu in the bar, which was just fine. Make sure to have a look at the frescos over the bar.
