The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Carlyn Berghoff. At today’s Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it’s still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff’s wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's “tradition with a twist!” Private Dining - Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. Very good restaurant in downtown Chicago

I was in Chicago on a business trip in January, and I had heard good things about the restaurant. They have classic German food, but other more traditional "American" items as well. This is a very pleasant restaurant, emphatically traditional with no pretense at originality, but the quality is right. Service is pleasant, the ambience friendly and the food well-prepared for a very reasonable sum. Recommended.

It has been many years since I have been to Berghoff's which is the classic Chicago German restaurant. The food was great though menu less extensive then I remembered. Sauerbraten excellent and my friends enjoyed spicy chicken. No one was in the restaurant on a cold Monday night which was rather sad but the place could use a face lift... More

I was in Chicago last week for a business meeting and was looking for a Friday night dinner location. My hotel staff pointed me to the Berghoff and I was pleased. German ambiance, with dark paneled walls. I thought the serving staff was very good and friendly. Not crowded, but it was really cold that night. I really enjoyed the... More

Always a bit nervous about the restaurants in the US that are considered classic. So easy to turn over to Disney feeling. Berghoff - balancing on a thread. My impression is that Berghoff take the rustic kitchen seriously.Traditional German ambience American style..The service was average, not super attentive, but I was dining alone so there wasn't any dinner conversation to interrupt either.

Made this a destination for our one day stop in Chicago and we were not disappointed. Light lunch crowd, got a table immediately. Very nice waiter. Loved the history all around us. Saw French Onion soup going out. Should have had that too. My wife had the Berghoff Beer Battered Cod and it was excellent. Very nice remoulade sauce and... More

The title of this review says it all. The food was bland, over salted, greasy and served on plates that were slammed down on the table upon delivery. Our waitress was straight out of central casting - fast talking, hurried and never made an effort to engage with patrons. The beer flight was great. Too bad the rest of the... More

We went into the Berghoff and there were no tables. It was a 30 minute wait but they told us to check the bar. There was a table there and my family ate a great meal. Wonderful waitress who was very helpful. We had the pretzels (which were gone very quickly.) Kids loved the rootbeer and we liked the beer.... More

My mom used to come here and was dissapointed by the loss of old-world charm and elegance. Food was average, service was average, atmosphere was slightly above average. Good rootbeer.

Looking for a classic Chicago eating experience, I ate at the Berghoff in January 2015. I went on a Friday night without a reservation, so wasn't surprised to face a 15-20 minute wait for a table for one. (The waiting area is terribly organized, but kind of charming in its way.) My waiter was friendly and pretty efficient given how... More
