Description: The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Carlyn Berghoff. At today’s Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it’s still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff’s wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's “tradition with a twist!” Private Dining - Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. I first discovered this place over 40 years ago. It was closed for a short while some time back and it broke my heart when I heard the news. On our last Chicago visit we stopped in here three times, twice to eat and once just for drinks in the bar area. It's not so much that the food is... More

A great restaurant with the classic German feel, the menu is an excellent cross sampling. Be sure to try the Reuben: the best outside any deli in town.

We enjoyed the German food and beer as well as the historic decor. The huge pretzel was the hit for the family. It comes hot and salty hanging on a stand. Also good was the apple onion soup and schnitzel. We liked that we were served German bread as soon as we sat down, as we were very hungry. The... More

We didn't get a pretzel but saw neighboring tables and Holy Cow! This was a great place, we ate there twice while in town. The food was great, the atmosphere was warm and inviting and the staff were very friendly. The other part of this experience I enjoyed was the cost. I was afraid everything in Chicago would be super... More

Ten of us stopped here for lunch where we were seated at a large round table. Our waiter, Anthony, was attentive and took time to answer all of our questions about the beers and entrees. The HUGE PRETZEL, accompanied by mustards, was a big hit with all of us!! The soups were outstanding, as was the Jäger Schnitzel!! You can't... More

Always great to see a place serving great German food, it's a type of cuisine that's often ignored. The schnitzel was great and I tried their taster platter of their beer -- a nice selection of craft brews. The service was great, and the location was a convenient few blocks from the Art Institute. The perfect place to head to... More

The food was great, service was good. We didn't have to wait. The fish was excellent and the rye bread is the best. They ran out of a few things early so that was a little disappointing for a Saturday evening. Worth it!

I'm someone who, when returning to a city for a visit after a number of years, will look for places that provided pleasurable experiences in the past. The Berghoff is one of a dying breed, an historic restaurant specializing in German cuisine. In fact, it has been resurrected recently after a period of closure. Purists and nostalgics rejoice, The Berghoff... More

I remember coming to Berghoff's in the 1980's, and I really loved the ambience, service, but most of all the food. Coming back in 2014, I found it equally wonderful. The food and the service were very good, but the ambience was excellent. I enjoyed the return visit!
