Description: The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Carlyn Berghoff. At today’s Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it’s still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff’s wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's “tradition with a twist!” Private Dining - Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. When I was young going to the Berghoff was a must with every trip downtown. After a brief hiatus it has reopened with and is just as I remembered it. This is hearty food for the hungry businessmen or shopper. There is nothing too fancy but the quality is always high and portions are more than generous. The Schnitzel is... More

This was truly not the best German food I have ever eaten. I have eaten in many German restaurants before and this was not one of the best. I was expecting more. The schnitzel was a bit dry. A nice gravy would have been nice. The spaetzle was also a bit dry, almost over cooked. The potatoes were under seasoned... More

The history of The Berghoff is definitely interesting. The original cafe dates back to the late 1800's. A true Chicago institution. After seeing the restaurant showcased for their strudel we stopped in. We had one of their own crafted beers & the mini brat/knockwurst appetizer. Both were very good. The sauerkraut was the best I've eaten. We also decided to... More

This restaurant is definitely capitalizing off of its long history in Chicago. I had the weinerschnitzel. It was good but dry. It needed some gravy. The potatoes were tasteless and unappetizing. My husband had the duck which was tender and flavorful. Definitely have the strudel. The crust was a little chewy but it was definitely the best item that arrived... More

We were in Chicago for a long weekend and try to avoid the homogenous faceless chains. We happened upon the Berghoff and loved the food, service, ambience and history. Simple food, generous portions, great quality and pleasant service.

Our party of four enjoyed dining here very much. My dish included four game sausages: Duck, Wild Boar, Venison. I cannot remember the fourth. My wife's pork chop was good, but not memorable. We enjoyed the tasty home made beer, and the wait staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Generally speaking it was a delightful experience.

Not what it use to be but still awesome. Go with the classic German dishes and you won't be disappointed. Their beer are equal any quality craft beer. Le them pair THEIR BEER (house brand) with your meal for maximum enjoyment.

They deliver good food and service in house. I don't think they deliver off premises. We had lunch before a show at the Cadillac Theater which is a few blocks north. My first dinner at the Berghoff was over 50 years ago. Since we were there on a weekend, the all day parking at the Monroe Street parking lot, which... More

The service and food were very good. The somewhat baron dining room lacked any charm, but the food was tasty. The Berghoff casserole appetizer was unique and good. Large enough for several people to share. We all had German entrees which were authentic. The best was the pork shank. The sauerbraten was good but lacked the vinegar kick in the... More

This is an attractive place with a German menu and many not so German items as well. The decor is gorgeous and classic. Prices are reasonable. This time for lunch I had from the appetizer menu two sausages in small soft rolls (bratwurst and knockwurst) with potato salad. This was a large plate of food for about $6 plus a... More
