Hard to believe Carlinville was a college town without a coffee house until November 1, 2012. Fortunately, that's changed, and The Refuge has become a magnet for downtown Carlinville. You'll come for the coffee and stay for the food. Full menu of coffee drinks, excellent breakfast sandwiches, healthy lunch sandwiches and soups and a nice variety of paninis and pizzas... More

Their coffee is amazing anf it's probably the only place in this town that you can find a Kale salad! They also do Karaoke on Friday nights! It's a great place for us college students to hang out that not on campus! This is the best thing to happen to c-ville since I started going to school here 2 years... More

Greek themed resturant in what was an old "Dime Store". Had lunch and it was excellent as was the service. Small town of about 5500 on old route 66 . . . resturant is highly recomended.

Great hospitality, excellent food and coffee, and a wonderful atmosphere make the Refuge a special find in this Route 66 gem. I loved the effort to appeal to the entire community - with free wifi and meeting rooms for business folks, a kids play area, and comfy couches for guests to relax and enjoy a good book or conversation. They... More

I was riding my bike from Chicago to St. Louis (seriously) and stopped in for breakfast. The staff couldn't have been more friendly. I ordered the bacon, egg and cheese panini sandwich-- and it was outstanding. It hit the spot perfectly. The owner (?) is a very nice woman from Kansas and she had great stories to tell about the... Wish this was my local coffee shop. Great atmosphere with comfy sofas and chairs scattered around. There was a piano and a lovely children's area. The free wifi would make it easy to while away a few hours. The owner was friendly and was keen to swap a t -shirt from your home town to put on the wall in... More

This place has a couple of dishes that are good, and a few people in town really like them. I really don't. Most of their food is unsatisfying, and more consistent with a "health food" joint with a main course of boiled lettuce and carrot tops. They do have an evening menu that can be OK on SOME evenings. I was in town attending a family reunion and the group decided to try out the restaurant. Folks I was with that evening included many meat and potato lovers and several went quite unwillingly. I have to say our meals proved any with preconceived ideas of how they would enjoy dinner wrong. The meals were excellent, my husband (one of... More
