Underwhelmed. Overpriced for what you receive. Service was good and very attentive. The ribeye we ordered was under seasoned & served black and blue to the point that it was cool in the center. If you order it, make sure you specify the temp. The gnocchi was good enough but way too much raw garlic in the accompanying ragout. Our... More

We expected so much more when visiting this highly rated restaurant. Our appetizers were small and lacked any sort of panache that one would expect with upscale dining. The eggplant dip was more of a spread. There were a few small pita crackers on the side. Our salad was very small and not memorable. The whole trout was excellent and... More

Why haven't we been here sooner? Because you have to make weekend reservations two weeks in advance! But guess what? It's worth it. After reading the chef's credentials on the restaurant's website, I had high hopes. Fortunately, the experience did not disappoint. There were so many things I wanted to try on the menu. Narrowing it down was tough, but... More

When a restaurant gets such rave reviews by national food magazines, I kind of expect to have my socks knocked off from the second I'm served. I knew going in it was pricey but didn't expect $60+ for my meal and drinks. Some of the food was spectacular (fresh mozzarella starter with tomato rubbed toast) and some just good. It... More

Chef Billy Allin continues to innovate and deliver delicious and creative menu items. The variety and creativity should keep you coming back. Sample all the small bites and settle into an entree that is not overwhelming in size but delivers on all promises. Service was annoying on this last visit and was the only thing to keep this rating at... More

Decatur is more and more noted for its restaurants, and Cakes and Ale is an old ( somewhat) standby that gets high marks. It is not fancy – bare wood tables, simple service – but one can call it ...nice. The food is … nice – very nice fried in batter okra, nice (and large), rather straightforward trout, utterly anonymous... More

It is really impressive how the Decatur dining scene has improved over the last 10 years. Cakes & Ale is one of those great, little restaurants. The place is very convivial—cheerful without an overbearing noise level. Service is friendly and quite competent. Staff that is knowledgeable about their menu is always appreciated. The restaurant has a wonderful list of very... More

To quote another reviewer from somewhere else, "Attentive service for overpriced, small portions that are innovative and curious combinations of ingredients and flavors." Food was quite delicious but the portions and price were ridiculous. The artichoke appetizer for $10 has two, maybe three measly artichoke hearts buried under a bunch of greens. It actually made me mad when I saw... More

Well, what do I expect? It's 2014 and it's Decatur. Of course it's going to be pretentious. Drinks are overpriced but at least you get lots of snobby attitude from the bartender.

We are lucky to have a lot of great restaurants in Decatur and have been celebrating special occasions at Cakes & Ale for years. Staff are very friendly and accommodating, right from the door you feel that they want you to have a great meal. Cocktails are a good as anywhere in town but the creative menu really puts these...
