We have eaten at The Yearling many times, but hadn't been back in over a year. The gator & calamari are the best, & the frogs legs are pretty fantastic too. The sour orange pie is something to behold as well. Willie Greene, the blues singer, has gotten better w/age. We all bought his CD & had him sign it.... More

This is a "Must Do" restaurant that should be on everyone's list. The memorabilia alone is worth the visit. Add Willie, playing the blues on guitar and harmonica and it's a great time. The food was mixed from ok to great, depending on the dish and your tastes.. The duck was great, the venison excellent, but a few in our... More

I had been many years before with my parents after visiting the Marjorie Kinnon Rawlins museum, so as we were returning from an event at Gainesville, my daughter, two granddaughters, and I saw the sign for the museum. I mentioned the Yearling and they decided to give it a try. They were very skeptical when we arrived, the exterior is... More

Five of us dined at the Yearling for the special occasion of a friends birthday. The food was very good and everyone was happy with the flavor and quantity. Our one complaint was that condiments were served in throw away containers.

We were headed to Gainesville for a football game and found a Groupon for this place, so we thought we'd give it a try. It was pretty much in the middle of nowhere, and a little scary looking from the outside (think Dueling Banjos), but it was pretty neat inside - all dark wood with lots of old Florida memorabilia.... I had been to the Yearling once, years ago, and enjoyed my meal. So when I saw a Groupon offer, I was reminded of the food and decided to jump on the deal for a second visit. I decided on the fried shrimp and my husband got the gator tail. We have both eaten gator before and I've always found... More

The first visit was disappointing. The buildings were old and you saw nothing but rooms attached to one another and a high priced menus. To me I would rather bring a picnic lunch and go visit the the home where she lived and wrote the book. The restaurant is just an overpriced tourist trap.

We came back after several years and were still pleased to find the "old Florida". He menu has retained that country goodness, gator, cooter, venison and quail. They also have a decent fish menu, specializing in catfish. Great country sides, like greens and cheese grits. The Yearling is well worth the short drive west of US301.

Our group of 4 dined at this Florida "find" on Saturday, August 30, 2014 between lunch and dinner as part of our quest to see "The Yearling" author - Margorie Rawling's home just a few hundred feet down the road. While the outside appears rundown, the inside is the heart and soul of "cracker" Florida offering traditional Floridian cuisine of... More
