We went to The Yearling as part of a motorcycle group ride. I had researched this site previous to the trip, and would say the reviews here are "mixed". So with some trepidation my wife and I made the trip from Tampa. We arrived at noon on Saturday (opening time) with a group of about 40 motorcyclists. We had made... more

My husband and I had heard about this restaurant and looked forward to a southern cooked meal. Well... being a southern woman who can cook, I would have rather went to McDonalds and got a hamburger. After looking at the menu I was shocked at the prices. We could have went to a real classy restaurant and not been charged... more

My family and I visited the Yearling last night for a birthday celebration dinner. We heard lots of great things about this restaurant, but it completely exceeded our expectations. From the outside it looks like less than nothing special, but once you step inside you enter a completely unique and special place. The bar/lounge is charming and quaint and the... more

We had heard good things about The Yearling, so we took the 30 minute drive from Gainesville to have a Sunday lunch. We both had the fried catfish, and it was by no means good ole home cooking. The country catfish at Captain D's is pretty much comparable. Plus, just 2 meals and 2 drinks was $40! The best part... more

Anyone that says this place is "worth the trip" is out of their mind. Extremely overpriced mediocre food. We had no alcohol. I had the shrimp and scallops and received 5 shrimp and 5 scallops for around 24 dollars. The shrimp were average and the scallops, if left in the grease for 30 more seconds, could have been used as... more

Having heard about this restaurant from friends, we decided to try it on a recent visit to the Gainesville area. The appetizers (fried green tomatoes and gator-tail bites) were both battered in the same flour and cayenne coating, and the green tomatoes were "deep fried" rather than pan fried -- the way these should be prepared. The Gator-tail bites were... more

My family dined at the Yearling for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The homey mood was set with a cozy fire in the fireplace and live music, guitar playing Willie in the dining area. The service was attentive, engaging and prompt - overall exceptional. Our drinks and meal were served quickly. My husband ordered a grouper sandwich. He's a fisherman... more

I was just in Cross Creek with my wife and after a long day of canoeing wanted something to eat. From the outside of The Yearling Restaurant I expected nothing special. But, once inside I knew this place wasn't just some run-of-the-mill roadside restaurant. The Yearling was a book (and eventually a movie) written by Cross Creek resident and author... more

Like a previous reviewer, I and my companion arrived for lunch a little after noon on a recent Saturday. We were escorted to the very back of the restaurant, in the room with the boat and, inexplicably, a small church pew & mock choir loft (???) We were the only diners in the room and were seated next to a... more

Here is a copy of an e-mail sent to Yearling recently. I received NO RESPONSE! My wife and I had found your restaurant in the course of our trip from Jacksonville to Anna Maria Island on May 3rd. We enjoyed our lunch and the service was reasonably good. In consequence, when we were returning home the following week, we decided... more
