Hubby & I were visiting Ft. Meyers for the first time. We were in the mood for seafood and thought we'd be adventurous, so we stopped by Maria's Backwater Bar & Grill. No one was around to greet us--a bit awkward. We were given a menu finally & told to find any seat. I ordered all-u-can-eat fish fry & hubby... More

My husband and I - both long-time islanders - went to Maria's to celebrate our birthdays on May 16th. I had eaten at Maria's Cajun restaurant that she opened a few years ago (now closed) and loved her food so we were excited to spend our birthday dinner there, and we were not disappointed! It was cool enough to sit... More

I live close by this restaurant and love coming here for both the all-you-can-eat fish fry (catfish, I think) and the laid back atmosphere. This is one of those off the beaten path places that is unique and definitely sans the corporate vibe. There's a back patio overlooking the bay and occasional live music. The service can be so-so since... More

The Salmon Duval was very good and the Gumbo was good (but we only received one of the 2 bowls we ordered!) It is BYOB so bring what you like to drink and bring enough for a long wait. . Waitress/owner was getting overwhelmed with just a sparse crowd. Wouldn't want to be there on a real busy night and... More

We have always wanted to try Maria's due to good reviews, the quirky outside appearance and it's a local joint! We stopped in and noticed there were next to no customers - fine, all the better for service to us! Not the case - the server was not attentive, needed to ask several times for a glass of ice for... We have seen this place for quite awhile as you pass by it on the way to FMB. Got there and what a place .... loud traffice noise, on the Bay, tacky and with a quirky owner who wasn't there on Saturday ( her day off ). But oh my the food was Excellent and reasonably priced. Be patient the... More

Decided to eat at Maria’s for supper one night during our stay in the Fort Myer’s beach area in December of 2013 mostly because of the travellers reviews but also because we love to eat at unique local restaurants wherever we travel and let me just say Maria’s is unique! Don’t let the outside fool you we drove past the... More

Don 't confuse Maria's failed attempt to open a much larger restaurant up the street, in the vacated sushi restaurant. This is the original Maria's Smokehouse, located by the charter fishing fleet. Home to "all you can eat" fried fish. But, better. She has brought her excellent menu with her. They still do not have a liquor license, so it... More

Thank you Trip Advisor for leading me to this authentic seafood restaurant. If you like local fare this hidden gem is for you! We're definitely returning to try another entree & yes, more gumbo!

You've got to be patient, what's a beach vacation for anyway but relaxing, and if you are you will experience some of the best gumbo you'll ever eat. Maria was attentive, but busy, everything ordered by are table was a winner. I will definitely return on our next trip.
