something for all ---delicious and healthy--or get the french fries!

Had the chicken congee which was soothing on a cold day, but needed a little more flavor--some herbs or salt maybe. Pad thai with veggie burger was outstanding! Tasty and filling--you may have leftovers. Apple chicken salad is good and large, also. Most items seem to have plenty to eat and food... read more

Met 2 friends for lunch on a Friday around 12:15. It wasn't crowded and we were seated right away. It got more busy over the next hour. Pros: -nice menu with lots of interesting options-vegan, vegetarian, regular -the food is fresh and nicely presented (the lettuce wraps and hummus are delicious) -our server was very pleasant and energetic Cons: -it... When we arrived in a Friday night it was one of the few restaurants Not crowded with young college students. The decor was interesting, almost 60's alien style if I had to use words to describe it. Interesting I know, but you'll get it once you see it. When we arrived it took the hostess a minute to seat us... More

This restaurant has been a culinary disappointment--twice. The food is not what is promised. On our last visit we ordered the Gyros with lamb. The meat in the gyros was dripping wet and the yogurt sauce (I can't spell it, but tzatziki?) was completely missing. My wife ordered a side salad with blue cheese on the side and it arrived... Jim, I am sorry that your visit was not on par with the service and food that either of us desire. I would love for you to contact me offline - sasha@homegrowncafe.com I want to clarify if this did take place yesterday, 3/19, so that I can follow up with both the kitchen and service staff that was on duty,... Best thing about Home Grown is that there are several vegetarian dishes available even though this is not a vegetarian restaurant. I am not a vegetarian and I wish they will bring back pulled lamb sandwich, but the vegi meals are great even for a non-vegetarian.

Thank you for your great review. We did change the menu recently. In our restructuring of the menu, we no longer have a specific pulled lamb dish, however, we now do have a braised lamb option available to add to any of our wraps, salads, sandwiches and global bowls. We would be happy to walk you through the menu next... More

I've been dining at Home Grown since they opened, and visit often. They have really transformed since their humble beginnings. The things I really appreciate about Home Grown are the creatively conceived menu, excellent beer and wine selection, commitment to live music and local artists, and their involvement in the community. I really wish more restaurants (and business) were as... More

We have eaten here several times before, so we knew what to expect. Dining room is kinda dim and service can be slow, but food is good quality...and cooked to order. Today we visited for Brunch at opening of the restaurant, which there is ALWAYS a line to get in. We were seated immediately & given menus. Our waitress was... More

My wife and I have enjoyed many meals and drinks over the past several years, however, we recently visited during "happy hour " to take advantage of the bar specials. Unfortunately, all stools were taken. The hostess said she could seat us at a table but we would not get "happy hour" pricing eventhough we were 20 minutes before special... More

We did a take away from this cafe on arrival to Newark after 10pm and it was horrible. Including a stray hair on cheese in the gf sandwich. Very disappointing.

The Home Grown Café serves a the niche market for interesting vegetarian and vegan food, and makes a lot of lists for good local places. It sits in a strip of restaurants and shops in the middle of Newark, part of a popular destination. They have a full bar, and I could see going here for drinks alone. We started... More
