A gastropub in the middle of Delaware???

A great little gastropub in the middle of Middletown with a brew list that rivals its changing menu! If you don't feel like eating at the usual chain restaurants nearby (Bob Evans, Ruby Tuesday, KFC, McD, Taco Bell, or Chick-fil-A), head across the tracks and into Old Town. The restaurant is in a... read more

What a great restaurant! Although a lite tough to find, tucked behind a street front business and downstairs, 1861 is worth searching for. An eclectic menu includes everything from oyster chowder to a pizza with every kind of heart-clogging pork product piled on it. Attentive service, good drinks, and ambiance - there isn't a bad table in the place. No... More

1861 is a basement restaurant on North Broad. You dine by candlelight . I always order the special of the day and am never disappointed. A glass of wine is pricey, but that seems to be the trend everywhere. 1861 attracts a later dinner crowd and the bar is quite popular.

1861 is a cool place with great food and a great atmosphere. Nice fireplace too! Highly recommend it for dinner. We throughly enjoyed the crab cakes with a nice bottle of wine.

The atmosphere was very cool. The servers were polite and very accommodating. That's all the good I have to say. Small plates, scallops were good but nothing my friend could make better. The duck confit had very little duck and was a deep fried rice ball. Not worth the money or experience. Our filets came out. We both ordered medium.... More

The food at this restaurant is excellent. Very tasty and there are different dishes to try every time. The servers are all very nice and helpful. My favorite, the Croque Madam was removed from the menu, but I am hoping they will bring it back!!! Yummy!

They want to be an edgy higher-end bar/restaurant but miss by a mile. My salmon was good but overdone and dry on the edges. I ordered fried rice instead of the beet salad that came with the entrée. It was good enough but not like any fried rice I’ve eaten anywhere. European size portions. My wife wanted to try their... More

1861 is a great place to eat or grab a drink. The food is amazing unlike anything else in a town full of basic frozen food chain restaurants. They offer a wide range of fresh unique dishes and have a very good beer, wine and cocktail selection.

We'll start with the good. My wife and I have been here several times, and we'll be going back again. We stick with the great bottled beer selection (usually not very cold), and sometimes a glass (a sip would be a better description) of overpriced wine when we're in the mood. (Ask at the bar for a napkin and an... More

I had heard good things about this place and was looking forward to our visit. Unfortunately all we experienced was warm beer, cold food, and terrible service.
