Most of my life consists of eating and making Italian food. I cannot rave about Alforno's Italian bread enough! We have a business in Old Saybrook & on a weekly basis go to get their bread to accompany our family meals. I cannot seam to bake a bread better!! It is fantastic as a French toast the next day (... That's a quote from a relative--he's young, but he's eaten in Bologna. My husband and I live in Old Saybrook and visit this restaurant frequently--to celebrate, to cheer ourselves up when necessary, to treat guests or just because we haven't been for a while . The food is remarkable--light and flavorful with some wonderful seasonal specialties using local produce. Their... More

Had a delicious Italian dinner here last night with my sailing buddies. Two of them had the lasagna, one had the sole or flounder special, and I had the hanger steak. We all shared the calamari which was tender and tasty, served nice and hot, not at all chewy or fishy. All was superb, just the right sized portions, great... More

I don't like to give bad reviews but when people from the Middle East pretend they're Italian and Jewish, this really strikes you as having bad character traits.I am a proud Italian American and was flabbergasted at the food we were given. The pasta had no sauce and had a gummy consistency. They gave us wrong orders and then the... More

Each time I visit my daughter in Connecticut, I look forward to dining at Alforno. It's a delightful surprise the first time you enter the restaurant. The exterior is quite unassuming, but the interior is upbeat and contemporary. The bread is to die for. I always purchase a couple of loaves on the way out. The owner is always on... More

One of the few Italian restaurants that was STILL amazing after our trip to Italy. Great food, great service, and a nice casual but upscale vibe. Good wine too!

Alforno is always a little surprising. How can such a decent place be in a creepy mall? It is and it is. The specials are uniformly good and seasonal. The by the glass wine selection is good: last time, my wife had a very good Rosso di Montalcino (not the usual selection.) It is not as Tuscan as it claims... More

I was staying at a local hotel for the night and chose Alforno because of all the cars in the lot! That's always a good sign. Me and my friend had some drinks and excellent grinders, yummy. Convenient location to highway, great price, great service, tasty food (excellent fries by the way) will definitely go back to in the future... More

This is a terrific Italian restaurant, one of the best on the Connecticut shoreline. Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior; the food is great. The pizza Napolitan is authentic and the monthly specials like squash flowers, gnocchi, and veal are unlike anything you'll find outside NY or Boston. My favorite: pasta Bolognese.

I lived in the Old Saybrook/Westbrook area over 20 years ago and was a HUGE fan of this hidden gem. Now, whenever I am visiting, I make sure to stop by and always bring a friend or two. The pizza is Italian, thin-crust, real brick oven pizza with FRESH FRESH FRESH ingredients. Bread and olives while you wait and family... More
