We go to Manchester CT once or twice a year to visit very close friends. It is a very quaint New England town close to Hartford. Shady Glen is an old fashioned place with great grilled cheese and milkshakes. Locals have been going here for decades.

Last year, we stopped here during vacation for a quick ice cream. So, this year, we planned to have lunch there. I was not disappointed. Yummy burger and onion rings. The cheese on the burger was fried with a crispy edge like a potato chip. I have never had (or even seen) anything like this. I didn't have the cole... More

Great cheeseburgers and milkshakes and ice cream! The store vibe was like the Friendly's of a bygone era, from the waitstaff uniforms to the revolving ice cream flavor sign. The prices, however are not from that bygone era. But still, I'd say worth it for a fun dining experience. Fries were a bit disappointing, but the Onion Rings looked amazing.... More

Have been going here for 30 years, and it had not changed. Seating is seat yourself, and can be daunting to newcomers. Basically there are two lines one to the right for bar seating, the one to the left for booth. We had 5 in or party, so we were quickly brought a chair. The hamburgers come with two patties.... More

We had very high hopes for this classic American diner icon, but sadly it left us a bit disappointed. We drove 30 minutes out of the way for this experience and right off the start, they hit my pet peeve of travel ... hospitality. We arrived on a Friday during the peak of lunch (12:30) and after walking in the... More

Born and raised in Manchester, Shady Glen has gone down hill fast. They have always been overpriced but the food and service was worth it. Lately the food especially the cheeseburgers are so overpriced for the quality and taste. The service used to be courteous now I seems to us that the customers are a inconvenience. What a shame for... More

Shady Glen is a true American icon. It is well worth the visit for lunch or dinner. This is my first trip back to Shady Glen in about 20 years. It was much too long between visits. It is really a step back in time with the menu selections on the wall. The cooks and waitress dressed in classic outfits.... More

An iconic restaurant with great food and really good ice cream. You feel like you are going back in time to the way Friendly's was back in the sixties, but with a unique cheese burger and condiments. Good food, friendly service, and it made my 87 year old father really happy to eat there. Can't get much better than that!... More

It's a great little diner love how the employee dress, really gives it a feel that your back in time. The milkshakes are good, and their blt was good. It is a great casual dining place. Their fried cheese is also definitely something that is unique!

Classic Americana This place reminds me of an old-school ice cream parlor or a Woolworth’s lunch counter. There are actually two locations and both are the same, even though one location is in a shopping plaza. My wife and I have been to both several times as we drive through the Hartford, CT area. Both locations are about a mile... More
