The Playwright offers a variety of food including several irsh dishes. You can get a very good burger and fries here or other "comfort" food, but if you have a hankering for sheperd's pie or bangers and mash this is the place in Hamden to get it. The smoked salmon is very good.

I am an admitted regular at this establishment. They have a 98% "got it just right rate" by me. Only rarely do they miss. The waitresses are friendly, courteous and thoughtful. The barmen the same. The food especially their Guiness Stew, Sherherds Pie, Chicken Pot Pie, Burgers, Pork Loin special, Pork Chops and soups are delicious and plentiful. And yes... More

We like to have a late afternoon meal or after a matinee at the Shubert or movie theater. many times a group of musicians are playing Irish music when we arrive which is a bonus. Love the stew and their choice of beers is always a challenge for making a choice. Always seem to have to take home part of... More

The Playwright Irish Pub Restaurant is an experience. It is an authentic Irish Pub/Restaurant complete with Irish music live or recorded. The live traditional sessions are every Sunday at 4 PM and every Tuesday 8 PM. There are also live singers/groups on Friday and Saturday evenings. The staff is very friendly and the food is excellent. If you wan an... More

I have eaten in this restaurant many times and it has never it has always been very good. The Cajun chicken dinner is very good. Spicy but overly spicy. It can be noisy at times especially if there is a larger group at a table but the place has a lot of atmosphere. The menu is a combination of bar... More

I've been to Ireland and this is as close as it gets to Irish food. I had bangers and mash and it brought back great memories. Others in our party of six had a diverse selection which included shepherds pie, Guinness stew, salmon and salad. We had a great time.

Trouble parking at 1pm, lunchtime. A group of woman retirees met to eat and catch up on lives. Too noisy to hear with a table of men near. Three of us ordered a lunch special of fish sandwich and soup. The New England Clam Chowder was thick, not liked by one person. The fish which we had hoped would be... More

Had to be the best Guinness stew I've ever tasted. Meat melted in your mouth and the sauce was outstanding. They should have served bread to dip it in but,in retrospect, I didn't need the extra calories. Hubby had corned beef which was excellent and the fries were a '10'. Had a dark draft ale which was wonderful. Live Irish... More

Playwright is a real restaurant. They have several well- prepared American dishes and a few Irish style entrees. The food is good but may seem a bit overpriced. Portions are large and the staff is friendly and efficient. The interior is a bit shop worn but it is clean and comfortable. It is usually busy especially on Wednesday when there... More

Great Irish pub. Service was great. Our server was not only friendly but made sure we were happy and satisfied. Great selection of Irish fare and more traditional food. The portions wer large and prices good. Dining room was quaint with a nice fireplace. The crowd was mixed with all ages and types. Many children with families but we enjoyed... More
