This is a exceptionally unique vegetarian-vegan restaurant that was far ahead of the curve when it opened in 1977. All menu items are made in our kitchen. There is no such thing as a pre-packaged item that is micro-waved, and then served. Whether it's fresh corn in the summer or delicious home fries for Sunday brunch, it's all the genuine item.
We have a network of local farmers who provide us with seasonal produce and another network of suppliers able to provide us with additional, delicious organic items all year round.
We have one of the best vegan menus in the country. Our effort to have a taste experience ready for you is balanced with the nutritional and health benefits that comes with a authentic vegan diet.

Quirky but delicious

You'll need GPS to find it, but it's worth the effort. For 38 years this quirky restaurant has been a vegan / vegetarian / feminist enclave (do visit the feminist bookstore while waiting for your order). There is no fixed menu or table service. Review what's on offer on the chalkboard, order and... read more

I have been enjoying dining at Bloodroot for 37 years. Need I say more? The food is delicious and satisfying and the menu changes with the seasons. Much of their produce comes from local farmers' markets and their own garden. They also have a small bookstore and there are items hand made by the owners all over. They are avid... More

The feels is very homey and down to earth. The restaurant is self serve and the food is very simple but tastes great. However the prices are a little steep for what you get. I recomend visiting for the experiance though.

This place just makes me smile. It's a nice change from the generic and gentrified parts of Fairfield Co. You order at the counter off of a menu written on a chalkboard. The furniture is flea market vintage-ish and the silverware and dishware are all mismatched as well. The food is vegetarian, reasonably priced, and clearly homemade from scratch with... More

It Ain't Fancy. Go elsewhere for that! This place is homey; you pour your own coffee, get your own utensils, pick up your meal at the counter...the food is to die for! All made onsite, using local (or their own garden) vegetables. Breads are all made by the crew at Bloodroot, and you must try a variety of breads with... More

Cats wandering atop the countertops, meager portions of so so food, self service and uncomfortable dining room. I'll Never return

All hail Noel Furie and Selma Miriam for their decades of building this institution for fresh, organic vegetarian dishes, good feminist lit, and a hearty band of souls who frequent this unique restaurant. And don't miss their terrific cookbooks: http://www.bloodroot.com/history/

Image self service, with spider webs and the hint of the heavily scented wicked witch taking your orders, and you pay at the same wait station off limited menu. Cats running around the bookstore and poking their heads into the kitchen for scraps, not to mention copying up to you for a pet and scraps. We felt ripped off by... More

The Bok/Choy with Shiitake mushrooms and brown rice was delicious. Next time I want to try the coconut Thai food. They also offer freshly baked breads. The oatmeal-sunflower seed bread was very tasty. For dessert, the Vegan Chocolate Devastation cake was out of this world!

This is the first negative review I have ever posted. The restaurant was in a run down house with more than one cat roaming around between the kitchen and dining room. Three of us dined here but we each ate at different times because the food came out 5-10 minutes apart. The first order, an omelet, was okay. The next... More
