Family Fun with an Unbeatable View

Great Western Buffet, good clean family fun, and country music... what more could you ask for from the Cowboy Ski Capital of the world? An easy ride up the gondola at sunset with breathtaking views of the Yampa Valley, drops you off in the Thunderhead Lodge, where the Western BBQ happens... its an... read more

Unfortunately, after nine years, we made our last Western BBQ visit tonight. The staff is still friendly (as everyone is in Steamboat), but it's just not SunDog, and the food that we have always struggled with, was even more limited.

I decided to join some of my ski club members for dinner atop the mountain for a BBQ Buffet experience. The sight was spectacular, but the food was so so. For $45, I thought I would be getting top notch crusine. Instead, I got ordinary ribs, steaks and grill shrimp. It was very disappointing if it wasn't for the great... More

We have been taking our family to this dining experience since we came to Steamboat with our young kids, and now we have been going with our grandkids. So we have many years of experience with this venue. Sadly, over the past two years, it has suffered a steep decline. The Sundogs, the band which has been entertaining there for... More

I would agree with other reviewers that the buffet is lackluster. Ribs, trout and turkey were dry though prime rib was moist and tasty. Could have been because we were there between Christmas and New Years. Restaurant was full and food was plentiful. Wait staff wasn't very attentive. Band was very good at bringing kids and adults to the dance... More

If you are looking for a neat way to spend an evening with your family, head on up the mountain! The staff dresses western and is great with their customers. There is a fun band with singalongs for the kids and dancing for the older folks. The bar is open and the food is amazing. Buffets are the best because... More

My kids really enjoyed this meal and event atop the mountain. The gondola ride up was fun and the food (buffet style) was good. The live country-western band got the whole family involved. My only complaint is that it was $130 (with tip) for my family of four.

I was at Steamboat Springs with a group of 38 people for a week of skiing. 4 of us decided to take in the western BBQ buffet. It was fabulous. The prime rib was mouth watering and melted in your mouth. The variety of food served at the buffet was outstanding. Couldn't ask for anything more. It was there. There... More

The kids had a great time dancing to the band. It starts playing at 7. I wish that they started earlier since tired little skiers need to get back to the hotel and to bed. The buffet is mediocre but plentiful. The ribs were truly dreadful. The rib roast was better. The sides were barely warm even though we were... More

We've done this the last three years for New Year's Eve. The band is good, but they do the exact same thing every year, with the exact same music in the same order. They have great activities they do for younger kids, like hanging your spoon on your nose and doing the Hokey Pokey. The food however has become less... More
