A place for the hungry. The thirsty. The legendary. Some people actually think the Wright Brothers perfected human flight. Around here, we all know better. Carl Howelsen turned Steamboat into a playground, skis into wings, and mustaches into an art form. His adventurous spirit is our inspiration - and Carl’s Tavern is a place for adventurous spirits to call home. Here, the hospitality is genuine, the beer is cold, and the food is made from scratch. So come as you are, make yourself at home, and share a few of your own legendary stories. Just don’t try to one-up Carl; you’ll hurt yourself.

Great Happy Hour

Stopped for dinner, but after so many great appetizers (and great "happy hour" prices) along with very reasonable wine and beer, it was hard to find room for dinner (although some of us did). As a previous reviewer said, their cornbread is outstanding, as were the deviled eggs, the oysters, and... read more

Beer was cold, food came out quickly and piping hot. The dry rub wings are awesome. Our burgers were slightly overdone but still really delicious. I would absolutely recommend for lunch or dinner. Service was attentive and friendly.

Carl's is/was our go-to place for good home cooking at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, with their menu change, no more meat loaf (one of the best things on the menu). I had a pork shank with mole sauce - a whopping price tag of $25. The pork was tough and it was presented in what I would consider a cereal... More

My family had a great dinner here. It's super casual (TVs everywhere, more like a sports bar), but the food was more than we expected. I had the nightly special which was macadamia nut encrusted Hawaiian red snapper over pineapple risotto with grilled bok choy and some kind of small peppers. Delicious!

This wasn't the everyday place that we were used to eating at. There were some of the standards on the menu, but it was the different things that made this place a cut of sort for us. First of all, we had an appetizer of deviled eggs. Never before have I seen those as an appetizer and they were delicious.... More

Stopped in after walking the river trail, very clean and relaxed restaurant. Server was great and on top of his game. Drinks were on point and made very well. Everything seemed moderately priced and portions were very generous. Would gladly return and try another dish!

We would have liked a little more help when we arrived, no one sat us for a full 7 minutes, no host/hostess? A little more food for the price, it seemed serving sizes differed greatly from one plate to the next. A little more booze in the cocktails for the price as well, don't be stingy with the pours. Overall,... More

Better suited to the bar crowd at night .Probably less noisy at lunch.Rib steak was outstanding. The Brussels sprouts were flash cooked at high heat and very interesting, Good tho! Did not care for the Scallop ceviche, was more like sushi without the rice.

Never even made it to dinner. Host stated it'd be about an hour wait and they'd text when table ready. In 20 minutes, they text and say table is ready...excited! Show up in 7 minutes and they say a bigger group showed up and all tables were taken (even though tables open). Then told us it'd be another hour...really? Bad... More
