A place for the hungry. The thirsty. The legendary. Some people actually think the Wright Brothers perfected human flight. Around here, we all know better. Carl Howelsen turned Steamboat into a playground, skis into wings, and mustaches into an art form. His adventurous spirit is our inspiration - and Carl’s Tavern is a place for adventurous spirits to call home. Here, the hospitality is genuine, the beer is cold, and the food is made from scratch. So come as you are, make yourself at home, and share a few of your own legendary stories. Just don’t try to one-up Carl; you’ll hurt yourself.

Good food, hit or miss service

Arrived about 9 PM on a Friday night. The bar was busy as was the dining area. Was told the kitchen was closing in 10 so "better order quick." We ordered but the wait was long....the onion soup was delicious. The soup and salad was shared around. The Rueben sandwich was large and good, fries were... read more

Our third day of skiing we went down town for a burger and ended up at Carl's. There was about 45 min wait but we got seated at a smaller table close to the bar earlier. The burgers were good and the salad and fries were great. The kuds burgers were large and plenty for an 8 year old. A... More

One of the best bars in town, and good food. Large horseshoe bar and lots of seating. Unique apps and a good wine selection.

Our first night at Steamboat my husband and I tried Carl's - interesting menu and great food. We split the deviled eggs to start - 3 different flavors were great. I had a standard wedge salad and my husband had their country fried chicken or steak?? Anyway large servings and very tasty. Service was good too. Only strange thing is... More

Enjoyed dinner a couple days ago and the food and service were excellent. The Cast Iron Cornbread ($7) was one of the best I have had, great corn flavor, nice crust with just a touch of sweetness. Six of us each had a piece. If you like Catfish the appetizer fritters are wonderful. Just a House Salad ($6) was large... More

Love local establishments and this came highly recommended. Sat at the bar, felt like a ski fraternity house. Service was ok, not great, one bartender for the entire bar at happy hour. ???? I mistakenly ordered the Sea Bass/risotto special expecting a gourmet meal. For the price it was adequate. The fish was a little tough and the risotto sticky.... More

Carl's is a high energy , busy and slightly noisy sports bar in a great location on Yampa Street . Their menu is fairly extensive with many unique dishes that are targeted to address hearty appetites . I had the fish special for $31 . It was a modest piece of mediterranean sea bass but well prepared , with cheesy... More

We wouldn't come back. We ordered a delicious fried catfish appetizer but our meal was downhill from there. Our artichoke appetizer had no flavor and my husband's burger was overcooked even though he was given the option of a medium temp burger. The waitress brought back my ID soaked in beer (held for a watered down version of a Moscow... More

The food was decent but staff was very unfriendly. Our waitress charged us for her error in bringing a wrong drink, told us we were taking too long to order, etc. This is the one place I visited in Steamboat where I had less than excellent service. Would not recommend.
