Description: Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

A unique place to eat and peruse. We had the opportunity to be seated on the upper outside deck affording a person a breathtaking view of the mountains, valley and park. Throughout the restaurant there is John Wayne memorabilia hanging on every wall plus a life-size cardboard cutout of "Duke", perfect for photo ops. Food was fresh and well prepared.... More

My husband and I ate there while vacationing in Ouray and found the food to be very good but they were really busy so the service was a little slow. Very interesting John Wayne pictures and things. The atmosphere was what one would expect and we would go back again.

True Grit Cafe is a neat place. The food is good and it is neat to experience the environment in True Grit with all the hollywood memorabilia. The staff is very friendly but either due to work load or how busy it is, the service is very slow. The food is also overpriced, but there is decent local beer. I... More

Try the chicken fried chicken. The portions are just perfect. You get a choice of vegetables, add a beer and it is all good.

This restaurant is a shrine to John Wayne, which, since I'm a huge fan, just made it all the better. There are so many photos that it is just wonderful to wander around in it. And, to make it even better, the food was really great. A lot of places that use a celebrity as a gimmick don't back it... More

We were told that we would not like this restaurant, the décor and service were great, but the food was average at best. The beer was cold and good. BUD CARTER, TEXAS

We stopped here on our way from Ouray to Moab and I am glad we did! I decided to have the Grilled ham and cheese and added tomato and a whole green chili to it. I usually don't go for meals like that when we are traveling to new places, but I am SO glad I did! The food was... More

Good restaurant on the way about half way between Montrose airport and Telluride. Consider stopping in for a quick bite or a beer. The servers were friendly and the food was good - nothing amazing but all around good American food.

We're eaten here on our last two trips to the San Juans. We love the variety of food offered. Something for everyone's taste. The food itself is very tasty. The service was great. Our beverages stayed filled the whole time which was greatly appreciated! We love the decor of the restaurant. It's bright, cheerful, and clean. We'll go back next... More
