Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

Great service and great food

The service was very friendly and welcoming. We were offered a number of specials that they had just been working on that day - especially the desert made from fresh seasonal berries. Cool place - sit out front on a nice day

Great place to enjoy delicious food, refreshing drinks and the friendliest staff in town while enjoying your surroundings of pictures from John Wayne movies, the old TV series Gunsmoke with Doc, Miss Kitty, Marshall Dillon and Chester as well as Dennis Weaver and more. If your are looking for a place to unwind, enjoy great food and good conversation, the... More

Vegetarian options, good portions, friendly staff. We enjoyed watching the passing people from the balcony. John Wayne wasn't in.

We ate here after a 14 mile hike, so we were starving -- when everything tastes good! A local we met on the trail recommended it. I had the Friday special of blackened catfish. It was good, but too spicy for me at that moment, which was easily solved by scraping off some of the blackening. My wife had the... More

I didn't bother eating here as the staff were not what I would call the friendliest. The food looked ok and the prices were ok as well. My friends enjoyed their meal but not too sure if I would go back again.

We have eaten at True Grit several times and the food is ALWAYS good. Home cooked style food and plenty of it. It is also great to see all the John Wayne memorabilia. Fun place to eat and great wait staff.

We stopped for a late lunch. We had the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, which were great, and the cheeseburger and onion rings that were good, as well. A cute, clean place with friendly waitstaff.

We had the pleasure of eating lunch here while traveling with a tour group. Arrangements had been made ahead of time, but everything went like clockwork, and the food was delicious! The owner worked just as hard as her employees to make our meal there a memorable one!

I've always loved the movie True Grit and this was a great experience for me to be on the location for much of the setting. I expected this to be more of a tourist trap but I was pleasantly surprised. We went late one evening for dessert and coffee and the experience was delightful. The staff were so nice and... More
