Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

My Favorite in Ridgway!

If you want a down-home or Tex-Mex / Southwestern meal, this is the place to go! The meals are all delicious and the portions are huge! Most recently, I enjoyed one of their Navajo Tacos. The waitress brought out some home-made salsa for us to try out with it. It was quite amazing!

We stumbled across this place on our way to the Black Canyon on the Gunnison N.P. We were there for a late lunch, so there was no wait. Our server was friendly and very helpful. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of vegetarian choices and enjoyed a taco bowl with veggie chili. My husband ordered a bison burger and... More

We chose to eat at True Grit Cafe and it was a mistake. The dining room was decorated by a taxidermist. Not an unusual thing in the Western United States. We were unlucky enough to be seated close to the swinging doors to the busy kitchen and the commotion was a real distraction. True Grit was busy and we were... More

I've been eating here since the 90's. The food is very good and more than ample portions. Had the Buffalo Burger with green chili strips and onion rings. My only complaint is the burgers are 1/2 lb and too big for me to eat in one sitting. Was on a motorcycle trip so I couldn't take the left overs with... More

Thankfully, the food and service here is much better than the saloons of the old west! This eatery has a local, folksy vibe and a menu that has something for everyone. They have a few local ales on tap, as well as margaritas, etc. The servers were very busy, but kept us well informed and happy for our dinner meal.... More

The True Grit is a special, iconic trip back in time with a wonderful mix of local craft brews, exceptional food and western hospitality. Located in the valley where much of the original film was made, the rustic, western themed Cafe is filled with John Wayne memorabilia and lore from his Academy Award winning role. We have been there many... More

After roaming the set for the original True Grit movie we had to eat at the True Grit Cafe and were not disappointed. We had the chicken fried steak with brown gravy and the chicken fried chicken with white gravy. Both meals were good portions and delicious. The smashed potatoes were great - just remember they they include the peels... More

. . . and the breakfast is good, too! John Wayne memorabilia everywhere in an Old West setting. The coffee is good as were the omelets (although they went overboard with the jalapeños!). A fun place for breakfast!

Our service was great - very friendly and prompt and our server had time to chat to us about our holiday. We went for the setting really and would recommend it for that - the town is like a film set and this place is the cherry on top. The blueberry pie wasn't the best I've ever had but it... More

Yes, the food is good and the decorating is very homey and welcoming. All the photos of John Wayne and scenes from True Grit are nice, too. What makes this cafe great are the owner and the employees! Was treated like family by all. Don't hesitate to stop by for a meal, you will be glad you did!
