Description: Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

Received a warm welcome as we walked in the door, and were seated in a large booth on the upper floor that provided plenty of room for our laptop to make hotel reservations for the night. Lots of memorabilia from John Wayne movies, the main reason for our stop. Food and service were great. We enjoyed trying both their red... More

A must stop. We had really good meals here. A friendly voice welcomes you (and everyone) as you enter. There is a very large selection of food to chose along with daily specials. The meatloaf was like I make with smashed potatoes and gravy. The 10 oz. sirloin was huge and grilled to perfection. Hubby said it was the best... More

We loved the atmosphere of True Grit. Friendly place with excellent service. We had hamburgers with potato salad which we both enjoyed. The blueberry pie with ice cream was so good that we went back the next night just for more of it with coffee and tea! Again a lively place but a bit on the noisy side since it... More

John Wayne and True Grit memorabilia liberally decorate the place and makes for a fun wait while they make your food to order. The people are friendly and the food is terrific! We even enjoyed watching an artist paint fall themes on the front windows by our seat. The person I was traveling with had the French dip sandwich and... More

We stopped here for lunch after riding the Million Dollar Highway. Great history in this little town. We were seated promptly and had our drink orders taken. When the waitress came back to get our food order, she took mine then left as apparently she was "paged" by the kitchen. She finally came back to finish taking our orders after... More

Really good, reliable food at reasonable prices. My husband has to get a burger and apple pie there at least a couple times every time we visit the area. We both love their pork green chili and I'm a long-time devotee to their huge mud pie desserts.

Sure they have John Wayne posters and memorabilia and most of the clients are wearing boots, but they know their stuff. The menu was so varied that it may take awhile to make up your mind. But the food was food and fast . The staff was friendly. We had a very good meal and time talking to the patrons.... More
