Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

Not to be missed for John Wayne fans . . .

. . . and the breakfast is good, too! John Wayne memorabilia everywhere in an Old West setting. The coffee is good as were the omelets (although they went overboard with the jalapeños!). A fun place for breakfast!

The True Grit is a special, iconic trip back in time with a wonderful mix of local craft brews, exceptional food and western hospitality. Located in the valley where much of the original film was made, the rustic, western themed Cafe is filled with John Wayne memorabilia and lore from his Academy Award winning role. We have been there many... More

After roaming the set for the original True Grit movie we had to eat at the True Grit Cafe and were not disappointed. We had the chicken fried steak with brown gravy and the chicken fried chicken with white gravy. Both meals were good portions and delicious. The smashed potatoes were great - just remember they they include the peels... More

Our service was great - very friendly and prompt and our server had time to chat to us about our holiday. We went for the setting really and would recommend it for that - the town is like a film set and this place is the cherry on top. The blueberry pie wasn't the best I've ever had but it... More

Yes, the food is good and the decorating is very homey and welcoming. All the photos of John Wayne and scenes from True Grit are nice, too. What makes this cafe great are the owner and the employees! Was treated like family by all. Don't hesitate to stop by for a meal, you will be glad you did!

Very friendly wait staff greeting you as you enter. Decided on 1/2 lb hamburger & fried onion rings, & wife tried the Mac&Cheese with side salad. Burger & onion rings were excellent & Mac&Cheese large plate full, enough to take some home. Side salad was fresh & very good! Highly recommend this interesting, folksy, friendly atmosphere!

Great lunch experience for a small town café. Very western setting, very casual, and my meal was yummy. Everyone moves kinda slow, so go when you don't have a plane to catch, and you'll be a happy camper. I really enjoyed the grilled cheese (you can add a selection of various items to the grilled cheese and I chose the... More

My wife and I were staying in Ouray, and decided to have dinner at this restaurant (10 miles away). It is very much a local place, with nice ambience and good food and service. I had meatloaf, which was excellent - made with shredded roast beef. Thought it does not have to do with the desirability of the restaurant, the... More

We have been to the True Grit Restaurant a few times over the past couple years when in the Ridgway area. This is a great place for us to enjoy a burger or a philly cheesesteak. But this recent visit, we tried the onion rings and they were some of the best we have eaten. You have to try them!... More

Absolutely the best breakfast around. My fav is the Huevos with a side of green chili grits. My husband prefers the chicken fried steak. Big portions for the hungry fellow.
