Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

Great place for fans of The Duke

The food was good and the location is nice, in the downtown area right across the street from the park. We sat on the balcony. Friendly wait staff.

6 of us with one large man and one very tall man. They squeezed us into booth. Very uncomfortable but told us that was option for 6. Food was very good but service very slow. Time of day was 2 pm

Very good hamburgers, they don't skimp on the fries so you don't need to get 2-3 orders. Fun place to walk around and see the movie pictures and posters from the True Grit memories and get your picture taken with a John Wayne cutout.

It was a beautiful sunny day and we sat out on the balcony to enjoy the weather. The hard part was trying to order something that we could eat in one sitting. (Our friends both ordered the special sandwich of the day and ended up taking half of it home.) My husband and I decided to split a sandwich and... More

Walking up to the door was awesome, but inside was to newer and would have liked to see the old wood atmosphere. We waited a really long time for our food and it wasn't busy. Great place to go in and have a beer at the bar then mosey on.

We live just down the road and come here frequently. The restaurant is a treasure as far as we are concerned. Everything is truly homemade, tasty and satisfying. Just be aware that they can get slammed for the lunch and dinner times when there is a heavy volume of tourists around. Sooooooo, eat a little early or a little late... More

Visited today and had a pretty great burger. The rest of my family enjoyed their food as well, but we were all put off by the lack of professionalism from the wait staff. They spent most of their time around the bar talking with each other very loudly. It was extremely annoying and some of the things they were saying... More

Historical place, good food. We have eaten here many times, and have never been disappointed. If you are a John Wayne fan, and particularly if you are a true grit fan, this is a place that you must visit.

We stopped here for lunch after reading the good reviews. Glad we did. Tasty food, good service and very relaxing sitting by the upper patio. Bread pudding was delicious. Nice views of the park and mountains. Lots of John Wayne memorabilia. Will stop again when passing through.
