Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

Pay homage to Saint John (Wayne, that is)

Don't care for the Duke? Don't like animal heads on the walls? Then stay clear, pilgrim. But if you want to mingle with the locals at a consistantly pleasant all-purpose restaurant, then come on down. Moderate service, and not a lot of tables. Try the chicken fried steak! Good beer selection and fun decor. Worth a visit.

Okay, the restaurant is cute but quite crowded on the night we were there. I had the worst bowl of chilli I've ever eaten...very little beans or meat and served tepid! Salads and burgers were better but wouldn't make a return trip.

The food was exception and very reasonable. It takes a little bit of time to get your food but it is fresh and not precooked which makes the flavor great. I are there 6 times or more the 3 weeks I was there. It is by far the best food in the area including Ouray. There was 2 people who... More

I was in Ridgeway for almost two weeks on a camping/hunting trip. We had two dinners here and one lunch. The homemade soups are to die for. The menu is well balanced with something for everyone and their budget. The service is excellent and the history and decor of the place make for an interesting evening. Part of John Waynes... More

I did not say this (I talk too much). John Wayne did. And he certainly demonstrated it. True Grit being a primary example of his rule... The movie was filmed in Ridgeway and nearby Ouray and the local folklore still carries, forty five years later, stories about the event. Like the story of the Big Man's Hat hanging over the... More

Ate there twice , once for lunch when we sampled their red & green chillis, and once for an early dinner before heading north for the night. The place is busy, and we had to wait a few minutes but nothing offensive, and things were pretty brisk and efficient once we sat down. We both enjoyed their meatloaf. Its very... More
