Description: Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

All the history here, this was and open gap when the John Wayne True Grit movie was made, then this place was built in between the other buildings, but they kept part of the wall advertising from the adjoining building that you can see in the movie, that is now inside the place, John Wayne posters decorate the place and... Brought my Dad visiting from Calif because we love this place. He had the chicken fried steak. Says it is the best he has ever had, and he is 81 yrs old. For desert we had the special bread pudding of the day, coconut & mango, it was awesome! Wishing we had brought some home. The staff is very friendly... More

Overall a good experience. Had a late lunch here on vacation through the area. Anything that is a tribute to John Wayne is OK with me. My chicken fried steak was very good and the others were satisfied with their food. Friendly staff. We enjoyed our booth upstairs with plenty of seating for five of us. The place is not... More

Stopped here for lunch while doing the San Juan Byway. After we sat down we were told a tour bus was on their way but we would be able to get our orders in before they came in. The service was great, food was good and the True Grit memorabilia gave you something to view while waiting on your food.... More

We visited the True Grit Cafe in Ridgway CO with friends recently and enjoyed the food, Western decor and John Wayne & Dennis Weaver movie and tv memorabilia. The 1969 film "True Grit" starring John Wayne was filmed in the area, and movie posters & vintage photos adorn the walls. Photos of Hollywood star Dennis Weaver, who had a home... More

Neat environment inside the restaurant & friendly staff. Sat on the patio which overlooks the San Juans. Food wasn't to die for, but it hit the spot after a long day of traveling around the area.

So you love John Wayne? You probably should try this place to eat. The whole place is a mini memorial to the late actor who filmed True Grit (1969) right there in Ridgeway. We stopped for lunch, had a bit of a wait for a table and slow service with some miss cues on our order, as did some other... More

Great location, always love the place when we have come here. Good food and service, but this time, at lunch on holiday week, they were very busy and the service suffered. Our food took a long long time to get to us after ordering, and the kids were restless. Waitress was trying her best, so it must have been backed... More

Our server told us upfront she was new. She forgot everything but was very pleasant about it. Our appetizer never arrived, simply forgotten. It took quite an effort to get our order placed, then our burgers were missing the ordered toppings. However, she was as sweet as possible and the food was very tasty. They offer gluten-free options which is... More

The service was pretty bad, it took forever to get our drinks (it wasn't that busy). I got a bison burger and it was good, but it didn't make up for the lack of service. We thought we'd get a true Colorado dining experience here, but we were disappointed. Whatever appeal this place had that made up go was gone... More
