Great Mexican Food & Margaritas

Locals know this place for its margaritas, which are potent, accompanied by appetizers. Food is pretty average but the convenience to the University of Colorado attracts a young crowd and it's a good place to have a cocktail.

The menu isn't too terribly extensive. I ordered the veggie fajitas that came with grilled squash, mushrooms, and tomato (in addition to lettuce, guac, tomatoes, sour cream, etc). The portions were large and the food was good. The beans weren't seasoned very well though. I would return. The waiter was very attentive and refilled the free chips and salsa when... More

Food, margaritas, and service were fantastic. Some of the best we have had and we are from the southwest so eat/drink a lot of both. Restaurant was noisy but many Mexican restaurants are.

We ate dinner here midweek in Feb. First time back after a mediocre meal here 2 years ago. Having spent several hundred days in Mexico on business over the years, I have some standards by which to judge Mexican food. The Rio Grande food is average and seems aimed at the college crowd which filled the place on both our... More

The Rio is just off Pearl St and has fresh, authentic Mexican fare. They are well known for their strong house Margaritas, and there is even a 3 drink limit! The roof top patio is great in the Spring, Summer and Fall but can get crowded during happy hour. We have never had anything that wasn't good there, but their... More

Beautiful decor and a marvelous location don't change the fact that I've eaten this food at twenty other nice Mexican restaurants. Servers were friendly and service above average. It's good food and worth coming back to, but not really a place I'd search out.

Marc, Thank you for the review. I am glad the service and ambiance were great. Sorry to hear you were not as thrilled with the food. We have many unique item I would encourage you to try next time you are in town, like our Chile Rellenos or our Texas style Enchiladas. We also do not use lard, which is... More

As an out-of-towner, whenever I am visiting Denver area, my friends know to take me to Rio. It's become a favourite thing to look forward to during my visit. Relaxed casual atmosphere, albeit a bit noisy with the college crowd, that is also part of the fun of the place, a young energetic crowd full of life. They have a... More

I have been in search for good chile verde and finally found it. Also bought authentic tamales to go. Yeah! So happy. Small simple place but very comfortable, friendly but the most important point is that the food is delicious. Even the salsa is amazing. Without a doubt the most authentic mexican restaurant in Boulder.
