Description: Kohnen's Country Bakery, located in historic downtown Tehachapi...
Kohnen's Country Bakery, located in historic downtown Tehachapi, California, is a delightful contemporary German bakery designed with Old World Charm. Honoring his German food traditions, baker Thomas Kohnen makes every batch from scratch - including some 20 varieties of artisan breads dense with whole grains, full flavors, and crisp crusts. Kohnen's offers fresh bread baked daily, including crusty rye, basil-barley garden, six-grain, sun dried tomato, delicate cinnamon raisin, and even pizza bread, not to mention pretzels, boiled-then-baked bagels, and Brotchen - traditional, crusty German breakfast rolls. We also offer refreshing German beer and freshly brewed iced tea. Desserts are gorgeous and irresistible, too. A few temptations are cinnamon crisps, apricot-walnut kolaches, and espresso chocolate chip cookies. The cafe also serves fresh-made soups and made-to-order sandwiches using Kohnen's breads for take-out, dining inside, or on the patio.

Good desserts, bread, and sandwiches

Does not look like one of the best bakeries I have ever had the delight to purchase food from. The German pretzels and baked goods are the best, Staff is friendly and what a nice stop for a snack or pastry.

Delicious made to order sandwiches. Baked goods made fresh daily. Large seating area including outdoor seating. Unique gifts and within walking distance of downtown shopping.

Fun place to look around - lots to see. Sandwiches are huge! Prices a bit under $10 - like the staff, like the bakery (butter rolls ordered always for Thanksgiving dinner), like the atmosphere.

People said it would be good and it was. A large bakery/restaurant, where you order at the counter and then take your food to a table, or to go. Several German specialties—all delicious that we tried. Good prices. Coffee/tea a bit confusing, but a small inconvenience. We will stop here again when going through Tehachapi, if only to visit the... More

Traveling south my friend had been to Tehachapi & had another local eating place in mind. I had seen the Bakery sign when we drove into town. We had great salads; love that you make all the topping choices. Very fresh & tasty. Couldn't leave without bakery goodies. WOW!! Chocolate Granola Bars R 2 die for!!

We stopped off here accidentally for lunch from the highway, and it was awesome! Their sandwiches and cakes are out of this world amazing. Our sandwich lasted us two days as we had the poor boy loaf, and it was a loaf cut into four with all the meats you could imagine. Wish I had one of these closer to... More

Clever title Donna, "Accidental Find"! We're a bit off Highway 58, but folks generally do find us. I'm so pleased you tried the Poor Boy Sandwich. Did we give you the history behind it? My Dad's influence! Would love to open a bakery in the U.K. Not sure how to tackle that goal! Thank you, Thomas and Colleen Kohnen More

We stopped here for lunch on the way to my Mother-in-laws house. My wife had the Beirocks and Soup for her lunch and I had the Cubano sandwich. The soup was very good and tasted homemade and her beirock was fresh and hot. My sandwich was grilled just right with lots of meat. We both had the iced tea to... More
