Michael's is a standout in Santa Monica

We had a party and the consensus was the food was all right, but not exceptional. The service was good. I remember the food as being better in the past.

We were two couples visiting Santa Monica and decided to have dinner here to celebrate a birthday. When we sat down we noticed that two knives were dirty. This should not happen in that level of restaurant. When we got our appetizers we asked our waitress for salt and pepper. After waiting a few minutes we had to ask the... More

It's in the neighborhood, it's famous and having resisted coming in here for a long time, perhaps because of a perceived snobbery, we went for an occasion meal on a Saturday night. The restaurant is lovely, especially the patio. It's ambient and cosy and at least while we were there, quiet. A nice place for a romantic date. There is... More

Dining in a private outdoor garden with twinkling lights hanging above is very nice, and Michael's has all of this. Romantic yet family-friendly. Servers are up-beat and friendly. Menu was good- appealing to all in our party. Food was served hot. Fun night!

We have been going to Michael's in Santa Monica for years, and while for a short time it had stumbled, it's now "back" and humming. Michael's, along with Chez Panisse in San Francisco, is where California Cuisine started. The food is fresh and delicious--much comes from the local greenmarket--and portions are good for what they call "small plates." I forget... More

Michael is very nice, and the ambiance is good. The food was a disappointment. There was nothing special about the flavors. The food was served cold/lukewarm. My wife ordered a simple steak medium rare. It came out very rare and room temperature along with the accompaniments. Overall it was a disappointment in an area full of great options to dine.... We stopped here for drinks one evening. The wine was overpriced and not too good. We asked for seltzer and ended up paying $9 for a bottle of Pellegrino.

Every time we come to Santa Monica we walk by this place on our way to the 3rd street promenade but have never gone in. From observing the people who go in, I assumed it would be stuffy & expensive. This time we decided to give it a try, what a nice surprise. From the outside you would never know... More

Not sure why its till open...There's no reason to return for more nonexistent service and poor food. Good: Reservation and greeted presently and seated immediately Beautiful and relaxing space Bad: Sat a long long time before server stopped by to say he'd be back Finally ordered drinks from the water-server Finally asked bussed walking by for a menu Server finally... Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
