Meh...was high on our list of the fab 5 to try in Santa Monica but for a Saturday night came in position last ;(

We very much looked forward to Michael's as one of the five selections we made (such foodies!) as must to in California and we have to say meh...sorry Michael's ;( We expected it to be quite busy for a Saturday night, but it was slow, less than 20% occupied. Perhaps it's run a little past it's... read more

Food is wonderful- setting is beautiful service is excellent- we learned that this was one of Whitey Bulger's (famed outlaw from Mass) favorite restaurants

As a family of 4 only 1 person was satisfied. Generally small expensive portions ( pizza size of a side plate). Chose a bottle of wine @ 45 dollars the "French" waiter continued to push two other bottles from 120 - 140 dollars & then tried to present a 90 dollar bottle as the correct one!

Very disappointed. The hostess was dressed as if for the beach, the waiter was clueless about the offerings on the menu, the busboys hovered in the corner talking and only rarely gave any service, They don't offer bread but arena charging $5 for foccacia. Have never been in a fine dining restaurant that doesn't offer complimentary fresh baked bread and... More

For a special night out, Michael's in Santa Monica offers an attractive location, and menu with inventive and tasty vegetable, fish and meat selections. Try the asparagus soup, the kale salad or any of the sides. The wine list, which features California, French, Spanish and Italian wines, is as tempting as the food, although both are on the pricey side.... More

We had a party and the consensus was the food was all right, but not exceptional. The service was good. I remember the food as being better in the past.

We were two couples visiting Santa Monica and decided to have dinner here to celebrate a birthday. When we sat down we noticed that two knives were dirty. This should not happen in that level of restaurant. When we got our appetizers we asked our waitress for salt and pepper. After waiting a few minutes we had to ask the... More

It's in the neighborhood, it's famous and having resisted coming in here for a long time, perhaps because of a perceived snobbery, we went for an occasion meal on a Saturday night. The restaurant is lovely, especially the patio. It's ambient and cosy and at least while we were there, quiet. A nice place for a romantic date. There is... More

Dining in a private outdoor garden with twinkling lights hanging above is very nice, and Michael's has all of this. Romantic yet family-friendly. Servers are up-beat and friendly. Menu was good- appealing to all in our party. Food was served hot. Fun night!

We have been going to Michael's in Santa Monica for years, and while for a short time it had stumbled, it's now "back" and humming. Michael's, along with Chez Panisse in San Francisco, is where California Cuisine started. The food is fresh and delicious--much comes from the local greenmarket--and portions are good for what they call "small plates." I forget... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
