Very Good Mexican Cuisine Served by Outstanding Staff

We have eaten here a few times and every time we dine at Gilbert's, we leave very happy and full (need a Siesta!). We enjoyed the Carnitas Tostada and the Chile Verde special. Their salsas are very good as are the fresh carrots they serve. It isn't too far off of the 10 freeway in Santa Monica.

If you're looking for tasty, unique Mexican food, look elsewhere. But if you're in need of an average meal with an above average margarita, this may be your spot. Service is passable, this place remains a bit of a hangout for locals, and on weekends you may even have to wait for a table. Food is dependable, just nothing to... More

The food here is amazing! I had the Enchiladas one day and the Chile Reillano the next! The spice and flavour of the food is great! I much prefer this to any tex-mex I had while I spent time in Texas. If you're in the Santa Monica area..you have to give this place a try!

If you haven't been to Gilbert's then you are missing out on one of Santa Monica's best local Mexican restaurants. My favorite is the Mini Super Special burrito (the mini is already more than what you should eat in one sitting). Don't forget the full bar - the Margaritas are legendary. It's cash only (ATM in the front) so plan... More

I'm glad I stopped by this place. It was fairly crowded so I had about a 10-15 minute wait (which wasn't a big deal). Everyone on the staff was very friendly. I had a beef taco, a fish taco, rice, and beans. The complimentary chips and salsa were also really good. If you don't like hot salsa you might want... More

I have been dining here since the 60's as a kid riding my schwinn bicycle to get a bean and cheese burrito. It still is my all time favorite spot to eat. The family owned business is charming and a local favorite. It's a line to wait on the weekends, so the sooner you get there before 5'oclock if you... More

This is their slogan and it definitely true! Everything is delicious, plentiful and economical. I dare you to name a place where three or four can share a pitcher of powerful margaritas for less than $15. It is a unique neighborhood place with distinct character and charm.

We were visiting the Santa Monica area from AZ and just googled some near by mexican food, luckily this place was close by and came up! While waiting a short wait for our table, the bartender mixed us up a pitcher of yummy margarita's (just go with the house blend, don't try to go primo, it is perfect!) Once seated,... More

I absolutely love this place! Amazing authentic Mexican food. I have ordered the Chili Verde and the 2 Tacos dinner special and both were great! Their chips are made fresh, salsa nice and spicy and rice and beans are to die for! They only accept cash and they have an ATM if you need it.

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
