I absolutely love this place! Amazing authentic Mexican food. I have ordered the Chili Verde and the 2 Tacos dinner special and both were great! Their chips are made fresh, salsa nice and spicy and rice and beans are to die for! They only accept cash and they have an ATM if you need it.

Cash only. Traditional Mexican food and amazing margaritas. Best bets are the burritos the size of your head or the house specialties (chili verde, carne asada, calamari steak, birria on weekends). Enchiladas are also great. If you like spicy, ask for the El Diablo sauce (not on the menu). Wait staff are happy to substitute boiled beans for refried or... More

I am usually a regular when I am working in the Santa Monica area. Pretty much if you are in Santa Monica and want some good real Mexican food, then make your way down Pico to Gilbert's El Indio! Make sure to bring cash since this is only a cash only place. They treat you like family. Although on the... More

Small and authentic, Gilbert's was loaded with regular customers and great food at great prices. Monday specials start at 14:00.

Going to friendly family-owned Gilbert's El Indio was pretty much a weekly thing for us when we lived in Santa Monica. Their selection of Mexican favorites was always enticing - as well as their excellent Margaritas. There was often a wait to get a table Everything from enchiladas and tacos to menudo is available on the authentic Mexican menu. The... More

Been to Gilbert's many times for great Mexican food and delicious Margaritas. Noisy dive with flavors and smells and sounds of old Mexico. Cheerful staff. Low prices. Up the street from Sony studios. Get there early to avoid the wait for tables.

I've been coming to Gilbert's for years. It's consistent, delicious food, family run and reasonably priced. My standard chicken tamale are the best in Los Angeles. Another favorite and served with all meals are their homemade chips and salsa along with marinated carrots. You can't go wrong. At times it can get busy, so just write your name on the... More

I used to come here all the time. I've been living over seas. I'm happy to say everything is still great. Great Breakfast. Fast service. If you sit in the front you can chat with the locals. Highly recommended

We unknowingly came for dinner at Gilberts on “Taco Tuesday”, when they serve mini-tacos for $1 each. As a result, the place was very crowded, but dinner for three cost us less than 20 bucks! The soft tacos were great, and they kept refilling our basket of tortilla chips and salsa. This is not a fancy place--- the Formica tables... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
