The food tasted fine but plating undermined the food. All the food was glopped together on plate. It felt like we were in a cafeteria not fine dining. Again this was Thanksgiving but eating at Melisse one would expect a more elegant meal. We sat down at 7:15 and were done by 9pm..

From the outside Melisse looks uninspiring and gives no indication of the cullinary excellence inside. The interior is very much the traditional image you would have of fine dining restaurants - lots of browns and creams and starched linen. There was a slight hiccup at the start when I was brought a gin & tonic rather than the gin martini... More

True fine dining is almost a lost art, but Melisse keeps the tradition alive. We have dined at Michelin restaurants all over the world, and Melisse remains our favorite. This is a very special occasion restaurant for us as it is very pricey, but we have dined here four times over the years and will again when the occasion arises.... More

Very special place - great food across a number of dining options - 10 course, 4 course or a la carte Wine list is very strong Impeccable service throughout with friendly staff operating in a non-stuffy fashion Foie gras was delicious as was the dover sole although the butternut squash soup seemed a tad watery. Everyone around us seemed to... More

First of all, I would always give Melisse the benefit of doubt first. Let me tell you that we are very experienced in dining all over the world and we are in the food business as well, at the higher quality level of product. To begin, when we arrived we were greeted poorly & not warmly. If I am going... More

Its pricey. If you are OK with that, I think you will love it. Food was excellent. We did the smaller of the tasting menus and were still brought lots of extra goodies, so it made it special for us. Also the wait staff was extremely knowledgeable about all ingredients, they did a superb job explaining each item brought to... More

Have gone here for years. consistently the food is wonderful. not only is this the best French food in Los Angeles/santa Monica but the best food period. This restaurant is not static but is innovative always giving one new flavors and taste to appreciate. The service is first class not stuffy with no errors keeping wine glasses full. When my... Great food, great service, great sommelier, awesome cheese trolley. Sigh, one should not have to bankrupt oneself for a good meal. The egg caviar got universal rave reviews.

Food is topnotch and well made. The atmosphere is authentic and relaxing. Doug is a great server, and we followed his recommendations. The sommelier (Brian) helped us with the extensive wine list. We had an excellent time, as always.

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
