Okay, this is a very good Italian restaurant. But to claim that it is the best Italian restaurant in America smacks of LA hyperbole and self-promotion. Valentino is an exceptional Italian cuisine. The food is fresh and impeccable; it truly brings the spirit of Italian dining to Santa Monica. I would recommend one to try the chef's tasting menu which has several different choices and numerous a la carte selections showcasing the pleasures of Italian cooking. Valentino also has a great wine selection which will clearly... More

I agree with Pulitzer-Prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold that this is one of the 100 best restaurants in Los Angeles. Owner Piero Salveggio and the rest of the staff treat you like you are a much-welcomed guest in their home from the moment you enter the restaurant. The food is flavorful and authentic - I am a huge fan... More

Valentino remains the paradigm of a kind of Old School Italian restaurant from days gone by. The Italian waiters with their lived-in attitude, the classic dishes, the classy maitre'd still played to perfection by the venerable Piero Selvaggio. The food here is excellent, with really fine ingredients prepared in a classic style. I started with the grilled octopus - tender... More

First time at this restaurant- the grilled octopus with squid ink fregula was absolutely amazing. The octopus was extremely tender and was actually better than what I recently had in the Greek Islands. I ate every speck of the fregula as well. Delicious. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Been coming here since 1975 and never had anything but a fantastic meal, start to finish. Piero Selveggio is the perfect restauranteur. He personally greets every guest like family and is there as they leave. The food is simply 3-Star quality, ambience is off the charts and service superb. This has always been an eating experience!

What a menu! What great Chefs! This was an intimate event with guest chefs flown in from Sicily to prepare food of the Monzu, the French-Italian food of the Gatopardo. Many dishes in a price-fixe menu for tasting. Totally fabulous. We did the wine-pairing as well. What a night.

An authentic, old style Italian restaurant. It feels calm and reassuringly Italian. The decor is understated and doesn't overwhelm. Its the food here that is the star of the show. A short menu but you just know that everything is seasonal and cooked well. My crab cakes were amazing. In keeping with the food, the waiting staff were quietly efficient.... More

A very good kitchen since the 70s. The owner is very king and offered advice on wine and was assisting in the tasting.

First of all, this is a great experience, whether it's your first visit or 101st, like ours. The food is always "WOW". The service is friendly, prompt and attentive...very professional, and at the same time, you have the feeling you're at home. One of the great wine lists in America is always a wonderful chore to wade through, but Piero... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
