I recall Lares in the 70s ... not I know that is more than 20 years ago ... but it had the world's best carnitas ... crispy on the outside ... juicy and succulent within. But, alas, not my recent visit experience. They were soft and 'characterless'. Nonetheless, Lares is 'authentic', warm and welcoming.

We were looking for some good Mexican food in Santa Monica and we found it. The atmosphere was great and the staff was very friendly and attentive. I would recommend to anyone.

Breakfast at this neighborhood spot could have been a winner but not when it competes with the world cup. Yikes, it got noisy pretty quick and the game was Argentina vs. Iran! One would expect a lot more pizzazz in the sauces and, at least, to get what was ordered. So, all we could say is that everything was just... More

The Albondigas soup was excellent. Three of us shared a large bowl. Great flavor and several meatballs. I had the Chicken mole, an excellent choice with a thick, dark mole sauce. My wife's carnita was good but a bit dry. Good Margaritas. One problem was that it was too dark to read the menu without a flashlight, Marriachi music was... More

We hit Lares every year when staying at the Travelodge Santa Monica. It's always been a fun and festive place (especially the upstairs) and the food is always good (albeit I am a Texan used to Tex-Mex). What I've noticed is they get better all the time too, which is what I love about them. Jesse and his crew run... More

Unique little place. Makes you feel like you are really in Mexico. A little on the dark side and loud side but I guess that's part of the vibe. Food was good. I had the catch of the day and it was cooked perfectly. My daughter really enjoyed her quesadillas and the salsa was very fresh. Steaks were good as... More

I've had the pleasure of eating here a few times. If you are in the Santa Monica, Venice Beach, or just pretty much in the West LA area, this place provides the best mexican food in the best atmosphere. It is not in the crazy, busy, touristy part of town. All of the food is excellent and priced fair. The... More

Really nice food, great staff and perfect experience. Would love to be back. My most authentic Mexican experience outside Mexico. Also price is pretty OK for LA.

Crowded, but fast moving. Great chips and salsa and carnitas. Two floors of busy activity of locals having a good meal. Glad we stumbled upon this and will definitely go back again.
