Unique little place. Makes you feel like you are really in Mexico. A little on the dark side and loud side but I guess that's part of the vibe. Food was good. I had the catch of the day and it was cooked perfectly. My daughter really enjoyed her quesadillas and the salsa was very fresh. Steaks were good as... More

I've had the pleasure of eating here a few times. If you are in the Santa Monica, Venice Beach, or just pretty much in the West LA area, this place provides the best mexican food in the best atmosphere. It is not in the crazy, busy, touristy part of town. All of the food is excellent and priced fair. The... More

Really nice food, great staff and perfect experience. Would love to be back. My most authentic Mexican experience outside Mexico. Also price is pretty OK for LA.

Crowded, but fast moving. Great chips and salsa and carnitas. Two floors of busy activity of locals having a good meal. Glad we stumbled upon this and will definitely go back again.

Searched for Mexican near Santa Monica and found Lares, a place out of last century. Family owned, professional waiters, quaint decor, basic Mexican food done well. Reasonable prices, great service and everything we'd hoped for. Potato tacos (with house-made shells) were something different. Cheese enchiladas were oversized and delicious. Beans are pintos, not retried, and very well done.

I've lived less than a mile from this place for 7 years before discovering it. What have I been missing? This place offers great, authentic Mexican food and the staff are amazing. Ask for the special "red" salsa with the chips, it will change your life.

Based on positive reviews we went to Lares for dinner and was completely underwhelmed...so much in fact that it will take a fair bit to get me back to any Mexican restaurant! The food was stodgy, bland and uninteresting. The service was friendly and efficient.

Went here because it was near out hotel and had reasonable reviews. We weren't disappointed. There was a good choice on the menus and despite being busy the staff were happy to discuss the dishes at length. Service was fast and polite. Food was well cooked and presented.

Walked to this restaurant from the Travelodge for dinner before seeing a show at McCabe's. Downstairs was reserved by a private party so they were only serving dinner upstairs (not sure that upstairs is handicap accessible? I saw no elevator). Complimentary chips and salsa. Both were excellent. I had Ranchero Tacos with rice and beans. It was delicious. Hubs had... More
