is not the Independence. Lucky to have such an attentive waiter. He checked everything for us (gluten-, lactose., corn-) came back and suggested always a solution to the better. Loved the European style of this place, it offered a decent choice of really nice beers, good cocktails mixed in front of you by the friendly staff.

We stopped here for lunch. There were people here, but it was not overly busy. The food just seemed a bit over-priced for what it was (although it was nice enough), the service was a bit haphazard across 3 different members of staff and the choice of both food & drinks was narrower rhan other places. Hence we would pass... More

I originally stopped in at The Independence for a single beer. They had a good range of around ten craft ales so I had another couple and then decided to sample the food. The fish and chips was as good as I could have hoped. Three big pieces of wild Alaskan cod and hand cut fries. The batter was nice... More

We stumbled across this place right as the kitchen was closing. They were kind enough to still serve us, and the food was fabulous. The service was great. Obviously we were fans when they didn't shoo us away, but the server was very friendly all during our meal. And the food was remarkable. I highly recommend this place.

If you find yourself in Santa Monica at lunchtime, The Independence cafe would be a very good choice for an inexpensive lunch. This cafe was very clean and modern. The young lady who served us was pleasant, efficient and helpful. The food was good, the prices very reasonable and we really enjoyed our lunch. I can find nothing to criticize... More

Not being used to Californian style menus, we found it interesting trying it out, we enjoyed it so much we went back (it was also on the corner from our hotel). Nice staff, pleasant ambience and the food was good.

We went during Happy Hour, but wanted to sample the full menu. Service was very slow due to the tables full of Happy Hour customers. It took quite a long time to even give our drink orders. If you want the full service menu, I’d recommend going after 7PM. Having said that, our server was very personable when she was... More

Had a really great meal here - we were pleasantly surprised that it wasn't a tourist trap too! Food and service were excellent - friendly waitstaff. Would come back again when next in town.

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
